Recall on all 1997-2003 Ford Trucks with the 7.3l diesel

Probably a very small group of Ford diesel truck owners here, but Ford has initiated a recall due to the Cam Position Sensor (CPS) failing and leaving you stranded. If any of you follow the diesel or truck forums, you know that this has been a thorn in the side of every Ford 7.3liter powerstroke owner.....Read here.....

It is really not a big deal. The sensor is located in the front of the engine and easily accessible from underneath. This summer I changed the first one on one of my friends truck in under 20 minutes as I had to figure out what to do, the second one I did in the parking lot of the airport in under five minutes in the dark. Ford initially sold the sensor for $200. I called to get some to fix the intermittent issues my friends were having as I have an account at Ford and they were only $20 a piece. I was told the price was lowered about two weeks earlier with no notice or explanation. I assume it was preemptive since lots of people were having this problem. Funny thing is all the parts houses were still selling them for $175-225.
 
My father had this problem on his F-350 a couple of years ago. (2000 or 2001 model year) Other than the cheap-o General brand tires it was the only problem he ever had with that truck.

I understand that it is easy to change. My involvement in this is that our fire dept had the 7.3 PSD in our E-350/E-450 medic units, and we did have a few failures a few years ago. Wasn't too cool......

That being said, the 7.3 liter Powerstroke is probably the best series of diesel to ever be put in a light duty series of trucks.....

I remember when I had my last Mustang GT (many years ago). The power window switch on the driver's door that controlled the passenger window stopped working. I went to the local Ford dealer and asked how much to replace it and they quoted me something in the range of $175 installed. I called the parts department and the switch itself was only $30 (which seems a bit high) so I bought it and replaced it myself in under 5 minutes. It was as simple as prying off the panel on the door, unplugging the connector and unscrewing the old switch from the panel (held on by 2 phillips head screws). $150 in labor for a repair that took 5 minutes...:roll: Never had any trouble with it again.
