Rec League Hockey Goaltending and being fired!

Nightfall

Well, it all starts with this email I got from a fellow goalie friend of mine. We have played against each other a few times and we have also subbed for each other so we have gotten to know each other pretty well. Anyway, he explains how a team that I am on right now (and have been on for over 3 years for that matter) asked him to play in goal next session. I was floored! Here was a team that I have taken to 4 championships in the last 6 sessions! My goaltending has always been pretty good. My stats in the last 6 sessions show I am among the tops in the league.

I called the captain of my team and he wanted to go out to lunch. No problem I thought. Well, we get to the place we are going to eat and the first thing he says is, "We are going with the other goalie". I showed him my track record and the track record of the team. That didn't seem to matter. I asked what was wrong, and he didn't put his finger on anything in specific. Him and a few other people wanted to make a change. Why make a change to another goalie who I am right about equal to though? He is maybe a little better, but doesn't loyalty factor into anything?

Here is the real slap in the face....

He then says, if we go all the way and win the championship then I can keep my job. I really took that as an insult. Here was a team that we made together from the ground up. We have got and lost people as time has went on, but overall the core of the group remains the same. That core has treated me with respect and I have done the same to them. However, to say, "Win or be fired" seems like a low blow. Especially with the time and energy I have focused on this team.

All I can say is....BLAH!

they sound like asses

You know what they suggested?

Our next game is a critical game. If we lose, the team is out of the playoffs. If we win, we are in.

Some people who heard this story thought it would be good to get dressed for the next game and play out half of it. Then, since it is a late game, no one else will be around the rink. At the half way point in the game, just skate off the surface and go to the dressing room. The team would be screwed.....

I know....evil thought.....but it is tempting.

Don't do that. That is extremely classless. The captain might be an ass for saying that especially in the playoffs, but by walking off the ice half game might ruin your chances with other teams. If I were you, I would leave the team whether you win a championship or not.

This is a weird situation, but its best to move on (hopefully to a better team 🙂).

Hockey is a team sport. I played on 2 teams this past season and it was more evident to me than ever. The better of my 2 teams is the one I captain and we have skill and then some. But we are really complacent. If we get down in a game, we don't show the heart it takes to really dig in like my other team does. My other team was the one that won the championship in its division this season. Teamwork. Teamplay.

The goalie is a crucial part of your game and even bigger part of your team. On both my teams, I use the same goalie. He's pretty streaky but when he's on, he's a wall. (we had a 21-round OT shootout and took the championship because of him). But when he lets up goals from the red line, nobody complains. Goalies have their off-nights. I wouldn't trade the guy for anything - he's a dedicated player and is the leader, even if we lose.

If a team wants to change goalies, it's because they think they are losing because of him and that they want to be serious about games. Some teams will stick with friends and don't care about winning/losing. I think you have to ask whether playing for this captain dude is even worth it anymore. If you're not winning championships, then the only other thing to play for is fun. What kind of fun is playing for a guy like that ???

Be a gentleman and play out the season. Then go find another good team in the league and take them to the championship next year...

That is the only thing stopping me from pulling a stunt like that....

Integrity

When I give my word to play on a team, I always see it through. I never quit. I never give less than 100%. Even if the situation is grim and my team is going to lose every game, I go out there and give it my all. I am always positive and encouraging through and after the game. I might tell each player a couple things, but I am not rude or degrading.

To just skate off would be admitting defeat and act like an ass. I am not going to do that for everyone. It takes more balls to just stay out there and play than it does to quit.

I have decided to not stick with this team after the session is over. It may be next week or later, but it is obvious with the current leaders in charge that I am not going to get a fair shake anymore. Loyalty just doesn't fit in their book anymore.

Play out the end of the season and walk. Each game you play from here on out talk to other teams and get a feel if they would like you for next season. If you're pretty good you should have no problem getting picked up and then each year you can shove it up your current teams ass as you beat them.

Face it, when you are on the ice you look like a broke-ass Bob Essensa. 😀

Just kidding, but yeah I'd say just start trying to sell yourself to other teams during the playoffs... make it known that you are a "free agent". What's your salary? A 6-pack after every game

Is this your main income somehow? Cause in your journal you said you'll be out of a job. But your site says your a IT monkey. 😉

Like Perculator said, prove your self in the playoffs so other teams will be interested in you.

From your journal"
"Watching the goalies before my game, I am convinced now that I don't belong in this league. My time is over"

Looking at guys like Hasek and Ed Belfour in the NHL, you're never too old to be a goalie. 🙂

Yea, I was kinda out of it over this yesterday. Course, three shots of 50 proof alcohol will do that to you. Especially for someone who doesn't drink much. 🙂

Doesn't drink much and you're a hockey goalie???

No wonder why they're kicking you off the team!

Drink up! 🙂

I drink beer after the games, but to get out the hard stuff at home and have 3 shots of 50 proof alcohol is a bit different.

To be honest, I really never drank beer until after I started playing hockey a little over 5 years ago.

Hey, having a low tolerance is good. Sure, you can go out and have 20 drinks and be buzzed. I was on the floor after 3 shots. Gotta love it. 🙂

I'm sure it's been discussed, but I vote for "throw the game" and make sure they don't win the championship.

Treat them with the same respect they've extended towards you. 😀

I would just leave now.
Fvck them. they have no loyalty to you what-so-ever. What he said to you about keeping your job was an insult, especially after he told you that they were going with someone else. Just the fact that your preformance meant so little to him that he would actually consider replacing you so easily, with no loyalty, tells you all you should need to know.

You don't owe him anything. You have already proved yourself, and should not have an ultimatium to keep your job. If you have another offer, take it. Screw him.

That's my $0.02
🙂

Thats a very good question.

He was interested at first, but he said he didn't accept. He wanted to talk to me first. Now, my captain says he commited and is ready to play. Now, I don't know who to believe in this situation and everyone is taking sides.

I have been chatting with the other goalie and he hasn't said if he would take it now or not. Just seeing how they treat me is causing him to think twice. To be honest, I don't know if he accepted the job or not or if he will take it. I guess we will find out in a week or two.
