Rebuilding My Computer

Hi im new to this forum, any way i took a break from pc's for the past year, and about two years ago i built my pc, it was a p4 2.4 ghz, gig of 3200 ddr, 9800 pro, 200 gig hard drive 400watt power supply.

I came back into it by playing such games as counterstrike, bf2,and quake 4. Playing these games made me relize that my pc is really dated, and my friend told me everyone converted from agp to pci-e... so i figured everything i had to buy to convert, motherboard,ram,psu,fan/heatsinks for cpu, processor, vid card

this is what i came up with from newegg(just to get a idea on the cost)

asus p5ld2 - $120

Now this price is pretty high, i dont have unlimited funds, im wondering if these parts meet the standards today, if theres places to get them cheaper, were the parts are under warrenty, and how much i can sell my old stuff for.

if your main thing is gaming, you shouldnt even consider intel. that prescott is hot, power hungry, and has a bad price/performance ratio in games especially.

heres my recommendation

AMD athlon 64 X2 3800+ dual core
epox 9npa+ ultra motherboard
nvidia geforce 7800gt
2gb corsair value select
thermalright xp90 cooler
seasonic s12-500 psu

should be about the same price as that, but much better.

definatly go with an amd if you plan on gaming, since you don't seem interested in dual core, go with an amd 3200, should be teh same price as that intel 630 but provide much more performance

you can keep your 1gb of ram from teh intel as its compatible, PC3200 DDR

an asus/dfi/epox motherboard using an nforce 4 chipset would be best, Ultra chipset would be best as you aren't going with SLI

the x850xt is a geneartion behind already and a 7800gt (current gen) should be around the same price if not less

the 92mm zalmann cooler is more than enough if you plan to do a little o/c but if you don't stick with the stock cooler as it is pretty good

PSU wise go with a seasonic s12-430 or 380, 500 is more than overkill

well if u could stretch you're budget a bit a amd x2 3800 would be awsome, for games and any other kind of programs that take a whole lota CPU power!

is new egg the only place i can get these things for the cheapest with a warentee from manufacture (ie not ebay) and is there any thing else i need

chiefvalue.com
zipzoomfly.com
monarchcomputer.com

all reputable - i'm sure others will chime in with their favorite online sellers as well

If you are sticking with Intel (that's a shame) then everything looks fine, just swap the video card from an X850XT to the 7800GT. The 7800GT is not only way more powerful, it also is much cheaper. They can be found for around $300 nowadays.

well, i really dont understand why you are sticking with intel, i mean, for the things you are doing, amd is cheaper, cooler, and uses less power. but, the changes i would make to the intel system are:

get a thermalright xp90 cooler instead of the zalman
get a seasonic s12-500 power supply
get a 7800GT. way more powerful than the x850xt, and a whole lot cheeper.
