When I power up it will recognize the vid card, cpu and memory. It give a message about cpu having hyperthreading, but when it is about to check drive information it reboots just to do it again. I have tried different drive configuations (one drive or the other or both. changing the master/slave or no drives at all). Also I have tried different video cards and memory sticks, even a different fan. No matter what I do the system reboots at the same location ( I can't even get into bios when prompted)

cpu = Intel P4 3.2
motherboard = ECS 848P-A
video = FX 5700 ultra
memory = Mushkin 3200 512
hard drive = Hitachi 180gb deskstar
dvd drive= BTC DVD R/RW
psu = A+GPB P4-ATX 450w
case = Silverstone Lascala

I would try a different power supply, or return the board. If it's a Fry's combo special, you have 30 days to swap the board, or 15 to return both the cpu and board for a refund.

This combo will not work. I bought the same thing from Frys last week and had the same problem. Go to ECS's website and look at the CPU compatibility chart, it says it supports Prescotts up to 2.8Ghz only. I was able to exchange the motherboad and keep the price on the CPU, but you have to be a agressive and ask for the Person In Charge (PIC). Tell them its bait and switch, because the sales people try to push a higher priced combo on you when you ask for the advertised combo. Don't be rude, just don't back down when they tell you the whole combo has to be returned or the mobo can be exchanged. I actually went through two of them before I researched it.

Now, you will probably have a similar problem if you try to use an 848, 865, or PT800 based chipset. They all say they support Prescotts, but many of them need a bios update with a non prescott CPU. Sucks if you don't have one around. CHeck my post in another thread which is more detailed, and hopefully it'll save you some time.

EDIT: BTW, when you go to the customer service area look at all the returned 848P-A motherboards. The CSRs will know what the problem is.

Well damn if that don't suck. Well I would like to thank you very much for you responses. What I think I may do then is just get another board that supports the 3.2 and then pick up another lesser processor for the ecs ( I have other pc's in the house that could us some upgrading )

Thats a good way to go too. The price of the combo is less than the cost of the OEM chip by itself. I was just so pissed that I didn't want anything to do with it anymore. :)

I had this same problem (reboots again and again) and went back to Fry's to return the ECS 848P motherboard. The service tech explained that they got a bad batch of 3.2Ghz Prescott CPUs and offered to try a new one for me. He said the motherboard was probably fine. Anyway, we swapped CPUs and 10 minutes later, I was up and running.
