Rebooting through remote desktop

I was wondering how you reboot throught remote desktop in windows xp? My friend is running the swedish version of XP and has a menu option for rebooting in task manager, I don't have that menu however, and on the startmenu I can only select disconnect.
Any ideas??

If I went to windows security I could select reboot, but when I did nothing happened. I installed some drivers and it asked if I wanted to reboot and I answered yes, but it didn't reboot anyway.

yes I can select reboot but it just goes back to the desktop when I click it.
I log on as administrator if it helps,.,

You can load the Computer Management MMC and connect to the remote computer and reboot it that way:

Start, run, mmc
add/remove snap-in, add
computer management
Another computer (specify name)
close, ok
right-click computer managment, properties
Advanced
Startup and Recovery
Shut down

Is that an acceptable solution for you?

It doesn't work =/ The computer I'm connecting to is behind a gateway (I'm connecting over the internet), maybe thats the problem..

I was just faced w/ this problem earlier today. I have to remote desktop to a user's PC and can't shut it down since it is an XP box.

I had to use the shutdown -r -m \\computername from the command line in order to shutdown the machine.

hmm .. interesting isn't it ? 🙂 Microsoft doesn't make it easy to reboot an XP box.

That's probably by purpose, 2003 Server allows you to do it although it gives you the same warning that Windows 2000 Server gives you.

But like we all mentioned it's not impossible to do, it's just not right there on the GUI. I have no problem running it from the command prompt.

My friend had a menu in the task manager where he had the option to reboot/logoff etc. And he's running XP Pro too, but the swedish version. Really strange...
