My system is rebooting when I play 3D games like NBA live 2004, far cry, doom 3, etc. I can play call of duty (the old one) for like four hours then the pc reboots. I checked the system temps and everything was ok. I even tried underclocking my GPU and my CPU and it didn't work. I tried giving my VGA a seperate power cable and I tried a lot of different power supplies.
The best powersupply I have is 430 watts and its got 3 fans on it. The other power supplies I tried were 350 watts and 300 watts. I am running windows xp. Any clue what might be wrong? Anyone? Thanx in Advance, Miranda

Sounds PSU related to me. When you get into 3d rendering, it requires more power, and theirfore more juice from the PSU. You didnt list your PSU, so I dont know what it is....

Is your RAM just one stick, or a pair of 256's?

I've had rebooting problems be either RAM or, as warcrow states, power supply. You tried three different power supplies. Maybe it's time to try other RAM or one stick at a time if you're using two. ;)

You may want to make sure that that 12v power cable to your video card has no other devices connected. My wife's computer has a Radeon 9800 pro card. A month or so ago I replaced 2 case fans in her computer and accidently connected the 2 fans into the same line the video card was connected to. Her computer would exit to desktop, get black screens or random reboot. I removed the cover on her case looked around inside and saw what I had done. After I moved the fans power connecters to another cable the computer works perfect.

Hi all, thanx for your replies, I tried using different ram and it didn't work. My 512 is one stick and it's got the low latencies 2-2-2-5. I don't have any other device connected to the 12v power cord other than my video card. I tried disabling AGP fast writes and didn't solve anything. I am pretty sure my PSU is good cause i bought it recently too from Fry's electronics. A review about it is located at this URL

I really appreciate your help,

I forgot to tell you people, I tried the video card on my 2300 athlon xp and it works fine.

Sorry for not mentioning this earlier, Miranda

The review of that PSU wasn't all that great, and it's definatly not one of the known good name brands, so I would still be very suspicious of that PSU. A weak or generic PSU can definatly cause the problem you are having, and the 6800gt is a great video card, but very demanding on power. I would also recomend running memtest86, and possibly loosening the timings on your ram if you get failures.

The 6800 GT is a pretty demanding card. And the fact that it reboots during 3D gaming shows that the psu isn't providing enough to support it.

I had a similar problem last week, with NBA Live 2004 too incidently, the game would start but 5 seconds into the intro my computer freezes. I tried re-installing vid. drivers, loosened OC timings, nothing worked until swapped out my psu for another.

So what would be a good and affordable power supply that would run such a system? and how come this card works on my video card works on my old athlon xp with the same power supply. I also tried lowering the timings on the memory and it did't work. I tried installing different mem and it didn;t work. This is driving me crazy :(
Thanx, Miranda

if i spent that much money on a vid card and it made my computer reboot alot i would give up and buy a console. it sounds like you've tried everything, if the card works in the other rig then maybe consider leaving it in that one ;)

Have you tried unistalling and reinstalling the video drivers? I'm no gaming freak, so I dont know what the games you play use - but I'd consider reinstalling DirectX too.

Yeah. It could be that the video card is simply incompatible with that motherboard. You're talking about a PNY video card on an ALI chipset. Can it get much worse? Try another video card in that board.

Ok this is all too familiar to me I have damn near the same system as you and have all the same problems as you. Its is not your RAM, Video card, power or any of that stuff. Its you motherboard and the cheep chipset. If you want to fix any of this you have to go to asrock.com and download a BIOS flash 1.4 along with the AGP updates and the CPU update as well. So far all of that well fix about 55-70 % of all your problems. BUT this may also mess up other games as well. I can play Far Cry and all the Battlefield games but not HL2 or any of the CC Generals so be careful. To be blunt about this trash the Asrock board and get one with a good chipset I?m thinking that is what I?m going to do my self. It?s just not worth all this trouble.

Good luck you well most sourly need it!!!

Also one more thing look at your IRQ's and see what your video card is sharing IRQ's with!!!! :D

Tell me if that worked out for you at all.:)
