Reboot Question

Not sure if this goes in another forum but I thought I'd try here first.

I've been crunching F@H pretty much forever and recently moved over to OGR. With F@H, I ran both the x64 client and GPU client and things were stable. When I moved over to OGR, I ran the X64 and GPU clients as well without any issue.

I recently upgraded from a GTX 285 to a GTX 570 and things seems stable running ORG 24/7. According to task manager, we're at 100% load.

However, when I try to transcode video, the system shuts down (no bsod, no hanging), no notice or anything, it just turns off, "cya later on the reboot". I turn off OGR before transcoding.

My modest system specs are as follows:

i7 970
Noctua NH-C12P SE14 HSF
Asus P6DT Deluxe
24gbs ram (6 x 4gbs) Corsair Vengeance 1600
OCZ Vertex III 60GBS (Boot)
~7tbs RAID 5 external enclosure over esata
Eagle Tech 620watt PS
Antec Three Hundred case
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

Thoughts, comments?

Haha, modest :)

I would be concerned that it is a power supply issue. I know you are are loading pretty heavy frequently, but maybe you are doing just the right dance to take it down.

Weird stuff like this has been my issue before with power supplies checking out.

Number two on my list (and easier to check) is the health of your ram. Hit that with memtest or another sexy memory tester later?

Sorry to hear you have moved on from F@H. You are doing it all in the name of the TeAm though, right? :D

Yep, modest until I can get that i7 990x and GTX 590.

I'll be back on F@H. I've been crunching Stanford since the "Genome@home" days. I get tired and play with other projects for a bit. ;)

I had thought about the PS but it's crunching just fine with OGR all day and night. 100% load is 100% load, right? As Scotty used to tell Kirk "I'm giving her all she's got Captain!"

No BSOD makes it seem likely hardware?

Does the video transcoder use lots of ram? I don't think FaH uses much so maybe it has something to do with when ram gets over a certain amount used?

If you didn't have the problem with the GTX 285, then it is likely the newer card and/or drivers if the card is used by the transcoder?

Just throwing stuff out there :)

100% load is 100% load, right?

Not really. You can have code executing, that takes up 100% of the processor time, as far as the CPU task-scheduler software is concerned, but the actual instruction stream that is executing on the processor core, can put varying amounts of load on the various functional units within the processor.

Different software, will give you different CPU core temps, even though all of them might take up "100% CPU time".

Just to continue on VirtualLarry's theme:

WCG uses 100% CPU and runs the CPU approx 4 - 6 ºC cooler than PrimeGrid does, which uses the CPU's different subunits more efficiently than WCG does.
PrimeGrid needs also more stable CPUs; if you e.g. run Prime95 error free for 24h on one computer and error free for only 4 hours on an other, WCG will not react in any way on the second computer, while PrimeGrid produces many more errors on the second one.
Not all projects are created equal - they all have different use of the CPU and/or GPU.

I'll try the easy things first and do a clean install of Win 7. It wouldn't hurt to run memtest for a few hour. I'll also pick up a bigger PS since the GTX 570 sucks a lot more power than the GTX 285. I think the Noctura is a pretty decent cooler and air flow is good through the Three Hundred. Our toys keep us busy.

Yep, that was it. I picked up a Antec HCG 750 watt Power Supply and we're gold. What to do with my GTX 285? It's still a good medium grade card.
