Reboot pending

Hey guys
I'm trying to install a program (JMP) for stats class, but I can't. It says during installation that I need to reboot my computer because I have a "reboot pending." After I press "restart now" (not restart later), my computer reboots, but when my computer starts up again and the installation window comes up, it says that I have a reboot pending again... and this cycle doesn't seem to stop...

if anyone knows how to fix this, that'd be a lot of help because i got some homework using this software due this monday.

thanks

edit: it's not the installation because my friends in the same class got it to work
i'm using xp home sp3

Assuming you've done a comprehensive virus/worm/Trojan scan as ScottMac suggested...

You could try running "shutdown -a" at a command prompt, and see if that aborts the reboot that's supposedly pending.
