My hard drive died recently, so I ordered a replacement and installed it in the computer. I am attempting to install a operating system on said hard drive.

Both my hard drive and CD drive are working and are ordered in the Bios as (1) hard drive (2) CD Drive. So in theory it should see the blank hard drive and then check the CD, at which time it would start the OS install process.

However when I turn the computer on, I get a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media"

My motherboard is MSI 970A-G45

Any help would be appreciated.

Why you don't go for the most easy option, which is to change the order so it checks the CD drive first? Optionally: Also disable Hard Disk from the boot list until you complete the first installation stage, which is made from the CD. When it says it is going to restart, you enter the BIOS, disable the CD drive then enable Hard Disk.

Or you could select F12 for boot options and pick the cd-rom during the initial load.

I have tried selecting the CD during the initial load and it gives me the same message. I have also tried different OS, so I don't think the CD is an issue.

There are likely TWO menus to consult under "Boot menu." First of these would be the order between CD and "Hard drive."

But there may be a menu for a choice or ordering among hard disks, PCI_E controller cards or "network" devices.

I only say this, because you mentioned the priority list of "CD" and "Hard drive."

Somewhere in your BIOS, it should show the model number/descriptor for the HDD and you should be able to find it in that second menu I mentioned.

Otherwise -- "somethin' else is goin' on there" and I don' know what it is.

The dvd drive unit could be malfunctioning ...
If you own a usb flash drive, copy your OS to the flash drive. Boot and install the OS from the flash drive!

You will a need a pc with windows 7 or 8.
How to prepare a flash drive for win7/8 install:
1. Format the usb drive as ntfs.
2. Copy/paste all the contents of the windows install disk on the flash drive - direct copy/root to root.
3. This is the most important step. Open a cmd(windows command promt) session with "run as administrator" and apply the following command "bootsect /nt60 X:". Be carefull! Replace X with your usb drive letter(the one that the os assigned when you connected the usb flash drive) otherwise you may be screwing the OS of the pc on which you're setting things up. This step will make the usb flash drive bootable.

... then you will have to connect the usb drive to your pc and quick boot from it with F12.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help everyone! I figured out the issue. The CD drive is bad. I will spin the CD (which confused me) but wont read the disks. I got everything figured out by using a USB drive. Thanks again.
