I like when I see someone flying the flag. It let's me know that the Civil War never ended in some people's eyes. There will always be those who can't accept the fact that their forefathers got their asses kicked.

It reminds me of the Dukes of Hazard. 😉

I haven't a problem with it though I do have a problem with some of the assholes who use it as symbol for their racist beliefs but then I have a problem with some of the assholes who use the American Flag for their racist beliefs or psuedo patriotism

to be honest, they didnt get their asses kicked. if anything, they kicked the Norths ass. if the South had the manpower and the industry that the north had, the war would have been no contest. its amazing the south dragged out the war as long as they did.

It's representative of a past that condoned slavery, lynchings and the seperation of this nation, why would you consider any of that with any type of pride whatsoever?

I'm from south carolina, and we've seen a lot of controversy over the confederate flag, mostly the NAACP throwing its weight around, casting the flag as "hostile" against blacks. I see very little racism from the current generation of 18-40 year olds in this area, and I don't see the confederate flag as offensive. The NAACP has to have something to fight about in order to justify its existance. In fact, I think the NAACP is boycotting our state for something on the issue right now. Its having no perceived effect.

That said, when I see somebody with a confederate flag on the front of their truck, I just think "hey there goes a redneck", not "hey, that guy's out to lynch some negroes."

That's actually pretty far from the truth. They are just rednecks, using that flag as a symbol of their culture.

This coming from someone who has used the term "Amerikkka."

I fly the Nazi flag because to deny history is folly.

Whatever happened to rational thinking? It's just amazing what passes for it.

Moonbeam is the AT God of deep thought.

My observation is that it symbolizes ignorance of the person who displays it.

Hey You ! Look at my Rebel Flag ! I'm an Arrogant, Ignorant, Biggot Redneck - and proud of it !

Say it Loud ! We're Dumb - and Proud !

That's pretty much the way I see it, too, actually. I live in the south, Memphis, specifically, and I don't see it very much anymore. Memphis is so diverse, it's just unreal. Heck, my apartment complex alone is a rainbow, African Americans, Whiteys, Asians, and Arabs just in my building of eight apartments.

This is just a freedom of speech issue. Maybe all African Americans should put a white flag with a raised black fist. Some kind of Black Pride Flag.

If it is legal to burn the US Flag, who cares about some flag that represented the south? A lot of this is about the right that states have to defy the federal government and protest too much government intervention in our lives and in the affairs of individual states. I dont think southern states should care what some jerk in New York thinks about the south.

I agree with you, but not the last part. The people in the south should care what people in NY think; I used to live in NY and we have our muskets lock, loaded, and ready to come down laying the smack on them again, should they get out of hand thinking they will rise again 😉

And I like the anology of buring the US flag...very nice way to frame it. Out one side of their mouths, they argue "It's only a piece of cloth." Out the other, well, you know...

I think who displays the flag makes all the difference. At my school (in California), there are a group of 'Valley Boys'. These guys are your typical, live out in the middle of no where, hunt anything with a pulse, can't spell their own name kind of hicks (maybe I exaggerated a little). Anyways, these guys are born and raised in California, and they are fortunate enough to go to a good public school.

Well, they also happen to be extremely racist, mainly because of where they group up. At our small school of about 800 kids, we have I think 3 African American kids (one of which was recently expelled for bringing a loaded gun to school). They have very little exposure to African Americans, and the little exposure that they do tends to be negative just because of the area (our school, maybe one security camera, a school in the next district which is about 90% African American has about 50 cameras, all over the school).

Now, you can easily see how this is a prime breeding ground for stereotype-drivenl racism. Anyways, getting back to my original point, these 'Valley Boys' drive their pickup trucks to school, with Confederate flag stickers and such. Now, in the given situation, given that these kids have never been to the south, and are rather racist, anyone care to take a guess why they would display the Confederate flag?

Maybe its their parent's car, and thus their parents flag. Therefore, thy may have gotten their racism from their parents.

Agreed.
I concur too. What do they say, those who don't know the past are threatened to repeat it. some thing along those lines.

Why do some New Yorkers wear cowboy hats and boots? Why do some suburbinite kids listen to gangsta rap and do this? Why do some investment bankers ride Harleys on the weekends? Why do some good little housewives go to Vegas and become sluts for a weekend?

The answer is obviously racism - all racism.

Why doesn't the current US flag represent that same past? 😕

Many of our founding fathers were not opposed to slavery. Perhaps we should be ashamed of our Constitution?

It has merit from a historical perspective. In those situations it is, imo, perfectly acceptable.

When I see it on a truck I have the wish that we lived in a lawless society so that I could show them them what I think of their attitudes. Variants of the flag have been coopted by the KKK as a symbol of hatred.

I would no more think of wearing gang colors as I would displaying the rebel flag. Even if I liked them the current meaning has changed.

Most cultures quit using symbols that were similar to the swastika for the same reason. Buddhism and Hinduism still use their symbols.

If you want a great display of the rebel symbol travel to Arkansas! It makes it real clear why President Clinton held the views he did.

Edited to add: Your Poll should include it is or is not for areas in the U.S.A. that are not "North" or "South." I live in Texas and it is not part of the "South."

So you could say the same thing about the Jihadis in Iraq then.

Personally, on one level it signifies "I'm an ignorant, white-trash racist asshole" (esp true for those who fly it outside the South, 3x bonus if its on a pickup as well.)
Or Two, its a flag of traitors who tried to destroy the Union.

I think the a** F***s should care. The northeast is the economic and intellectual center of this country. What the hell has the south ever done except bring misery to others?

Especially Texas. Nothing grows there, its hot as hell, and the people are annoying. Complain about welfare LOL. We pay for most of these states.
