Reasons for Explorer to lock up while accessing a network folder

A co-worker was trying to open an Excel file from a network file location (\\servername\foldername\filename.xls) and it locked up explorer a couple times and said "not responding" on the exporer window.

Our new IT manager asked me what was wrong and refused to believe it just sometimes happens when opening files over the network like that. He said at Boeing where he worked before, that would never happen to them, and it has never happened to him at work or at home.

Is this something that is somewhat common? Or is it a big problem that has some sort of solution?

Thanks!

You have a problem for sure. That only happens where there is high packet loss or the client can't reach the server/domain controller. It also happens if you have name resolution/DNS problems or the network configuration of the PC is not correct.

This can happen if your domain controller is not on your LAN and is located via a wan link and that wan link is full. Or AD isn't setup properly and the PCs are actually going to your Japan location for all AD related stuff.

Is this happening just for this one user/workstation or does it happen for all users/workstations? If it happens just for the one machine I'd start troubleshooting that machine, i.e network settings, event viewer, etc. If it happens for multiple machines I'd begin with the server and network, i.e DNS, WINS, permissions on that share, whether or not the file is opened by another user, etc.

I don't think it happens that often, maybe once every couple months.

The machine that had the problem this time (twice within 5 min) is a laptop. I made sure the wireless was disabled, but it has been acting a bit funky lately. I bet it is a machine problem.

I used to get really long delays connecting to network shares when I had a list of shares in the network places that were no longer valid. I'm explaining this poorly, but apparently ever time I accessed a valid network share windows XP was refreshing/attempting to connect to the obsolete shares. After I cleared them out (I think was as simple as deleting them) the problem was resolved.
