Darwin will take care of him in due time, don't worry.

I wouldn't be bothered by noise until 11pm, but if I was being too noisy for a neighbor then the time is negotiable as long as they come talk to me and they have a valid reason - early work hours, kids, weird sleeping disorders or illness. But if they were just grumpy and angry at the world I'd leave my sub on till whenever I felt like it.

Hopefully; that would definitely suck. This minor experience (which, albeit, has been going on for about three months) just strengthened the sympathy I feel for people living in complexes with inconsiderate neighbors and incompetent or disinterested office staff.

Agree about the in person visit, though. I feel he responded better than he would have to a note, no matter how polite it may have been.

10-10 on weeknights is usually my rule of thumb (2 am - 12 pm on weekends)

personally, I don't really mind anything unless it's preventing me from sleeping and I'm usually up till 2-3 am, but after 10 pm and before 10 am, I make an effort to keep it down for my neighbor's sake.

This is why I bought a house out in the sticks. I can watch a movie at ear deafening volumes early into the morning or throw a party and have a bonfire that consumes a couch :)

Most places I've lived have laws stating that high noise levels between 10pm and 6am constitute breaking the peace. That's a good time for quiet, imho.

A friend lives in another building than I do, at our apt complex. She had a noisy neighbor, downstairs and 2 doors down, that thought it was entirely acceptable to have obnoxiously loud parties all night long. First time he did it, he got a warning. Second time, he was told there better not be a 3rd time, or he'd be out the gate AND his first sergeant (air force) would be notified of the problem. Seems he has seen the light since then! ;)

It doesn't matter where you live IMHO - the noise coming from your dwelling should not be heard by anyone else no matter what time of the day [thank god for Home Owner Associations!] :)

With that said - a quick chat will usually resolve the issue. If not - the local police can rectify the problem rather quickly. :)

If you're living in an apartment building or townhome, I don't think you can reasonably expect peace and quiet all the time. I think a fair time is 11pm-6am weekdays, 1am-6am weekends.

I believe our local noise ordinance is 10 pm to 7 am M-F, and 10 pm to 8 am on the weekend. Fortunately, they also passed an ordinance that sez as long as I'm willing to sign a noise complaint, regardless of the time, the cop has to write the ticket, and it goes to court.

We have Mexican neighbors who have a party/jumphouse business. They have huge parties in their backyard several times per year, (kids b-days and such) and they usually hire a DJ and sound system. You can hear the loud cucaracha music for a couple of miles...and it goes until 11 pm every time.
I've gone down there several times and asked them to turn it down...and gotten nowhere. I finally had enough a while back and started calling the cops every time it gets too loud. Fortunately, it's never gotten to the point where I have to actually sign the complaint...once the cops show up and threaten them with it...it quiets down. They've gotten a couple of tickets for disturbing the peace on after-hours calls (after 10 pm) because of the loud music. You'd think they'd learn sooner or later.
The last couple of times the cops came out, they also checked all the cars parked on the street...and wrote half a dozen parking tickets...expired plates, parking in front of driveways, etc. :D

6 am seems a bit early to me, and 1 am--even on weekends--seems late, but that's one of the reasons I started the thread (to get a variety of viewpoints, and see if my own was completely skewed).

And no, I never truly expect perfect peace and quiet living in an apartment, and have accepted that by choosing this instead of a house, I have to live with a certain amount of noise day and night. I never mind the sounds of walking or the occasional dropped (heavy) item. I just feel that noises over which you have direct control (such as music volume) should be brought to within reasonable levels pretty much all the time.

But that's just my own ideal opinion.

I had the same issue, only it was salsa music. I talked to him and he told me it wasn't loud. That's why I moved into a retirement community. :p

Gotta agree with this. In an apartment, if you can hear their business outside their walls, its too loud and they are being asshats.

I live in a townhouse and I listen to music or watch TV until about 2AM. I make sure it isn't that loud though but I'm guessing my neighbor may still pick up a bit of sub. I keep my volume at a level such that if I leave the room I can barely hear it.

Alright, so apparently my stopping by in person didn't have quite the necessary effect, as last night, and again right now (20 'till 9pm), I can still hear the music. I plan on leaving this note in their mailbox:

"I appreciate you guys being polite when I stopped by about the music last night. Unfortunately, the sound is still loud enough to make it difficult for me to work and sleep. If you can keep the volume down, especially at night, I'll do my best to stop bugging you. If you have any concerns of your own, feel free to let me know. Thanks in advance."

If that doesn't work out, then I'll be swinging by the office sometime soon to talk to someone there.

Honestly, that's the main thought that caused me to put off the in-person visit for so long. They both seem like nice guys, and the one with whom I spoke was very reasonable, so it's possible that I simply didn't get my point across strongly enough, but I'll be watching for any new dings or scratches over the next few days to be sure.
