I bought the Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12 80mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan/Heatsink and when I first put it in, the CPU went from around 50C to about 40C. I did apply some artic silver on it and I thought wow, its cooling my CPU alot better now.

I have an AXP Barton 2400+ o/ced to about 2220MHz. I checked on the temp recently and its at about 53C!!!! I have no idea how it could go up so much. My case temp is about 39C which I think is pretty good. I have fans blowing in and out so the circulation is good. I just don't know why my CPU gets so hot. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

I've got an XP2500. Case is at 30C and CPU is at 48C. Maybe the XP's just run to the warm side? I've got three case fans and a heatsink that spins at 7000 plus and sounds like a tornado, and these are still my results.

Athlon XPs do generally run very hot. 53C is nothing to worry about. You can't expect max temps in the 40s, like with the Athlon 64s.

I don't think it's the temp that he is really worried about but the huge change from what it was at with the same cooler to now. I had this happen with my AXP using a Alpha PAL8045 but that was due to switching the fan. I am hoping the si-97a I ordered will do a better job cooling the cpu but we shall see.

As for the OP, I don't know why the temps could have increased so far unless you turned the inside of your comp into a dust trap. Get in there with a can of compressed air and try to blow out the insides. Pay special attention to the HSF, I know my alpha likes to trap dust like no other. If that does not work you may need to reseat the hsf with fresh AS 5.

i agree with Spike, i remember the Volcanoes having a pretty dense fin pattern and can trap a lot of dust. Check between your heatsink and fan for dust buildup. Also, maybe your fan is turned down too low. The fans on those coolers are extremely loud at full speed, so i doubt you have it at full speed. Might be time for bigger, quieter cooler.

39°C is a little over 102°F, which is not really a "cool" case, so 53°C on the CPU is probably not too bad, really, expecially overcooked like that.

If you could get some better circulation in your case, your CPU's heatsink would get more effective. As it is, it's trying to exchange heat with warm air, which is difficult even if you spin the fan up very high.

Some cases never do circulate very well, so you might want to consider putting a 120mm fan on the side panel. It's fairly easy to do, and you'd be blowing cool outside air on your CPU and video card both, instead of warm inside air. Makes a huge difference.
