Apologies if a repost, but how many of you people would get screwed if somebody you knew found your blog?Mom finds out about blog

For those following along at home a blog is short for web log, which is a place for people without enough attention (or access to anandtech) to pretend like others actually care about the intricate details of their lives. Don't worry, I didn't know what a blog was until this year either :)

I could never understand why ANYONE would want to post, for all the world to see, what they do day in and day out. It's the pinnacle of attention-whore-idness, IMHO.

Oh, and The Onion rocks, by the way ;)

The Onion freaking rules!

No blog here, but I have found a couple of friends "blogs" and they were such fakers. :/

lol

I do have a blog, but I don't make everything I write public. Instead of having the blog because I want to the public to be interested in me, I have it for my self. I used to keep a journal in a file saved on my hard drive. Nobody saw it but me. Well... now I have some parts of it online, but there are security features in place to prevent the public from gaining access to things I don't want them to. Very, very little is on the public side. Those of my friends, and some of the public, that read my blog, create accounts on the site - and I give them access to what I want them to see.

I'm not an attention whore - I like to keep it for me... like part of my history. If others want to know more about me, and are interested in reading it, I'll let them (most of the time). But that's not the main reason I have the site.

I am curious of the OP actually considers the Onion a real news source...

His post suggests he does since he is pretty serious about his warning.

Skoorb, the ATOT king of satire, not knowing about The Onion? Impossible. But, even though it is satire, that situation could easily happen in real life.

I maintain a mostly technical blog that had been very productive for me. Through my blog I was contacted by countless people, including many very well-knowns in the software world. It served me very well, but I haven't updated it in a few months due to an extremely long project that won't end.

I went to visit a client a few weeks back, and when I arrived he told me he had read some of my musings, and that he already knew about me. I guess he had googled my name and started reading my blog before I got there. It was a bit weird, but since I keep it technical and not personal I'm not at all worried about others reading it.

My boss also found my blog, and she had used it to see how I "really felt" about the current state of our projects. I wrote a few things that initially pissed her off, but we have a good working relationship so it was no big deal.

Do you feel that way about all of those at Microsoft like Don Box, Chris Bumme, Susan Warren, Rob Howard, ad nauseum who blog on GDN and weblogs.asp.net (where I blog)?

Hey, don't embarrass me! I knew what a blog was, but I never understood the origin of the word. I always wondered its etymology, since it didn't make sense to me.

In regards to the story: I understand that the Onion is a site for satirical work. Therefore I'll ask, is this story real? Are all events factual? It seems rather suspicious, especially with a 30 year old guy caring whether or not his mum freaks out about how he spends his earned income or credit.

Anyway, it's still funny, regardless! Hahaha! I generally don't post things on the 'net that I would regret or would be ashamed to say in real life. I don't run a website at the moment. But when I did have one, it contained information I wouldn't mind my family reading. If it contained something I would not want my family to read, then I didn't share the site with them in the first place. I didn't even have the site published. It was limited to a few people to whom I disclosed the address. If I must resort to writing my thoughts, then I keep it private with password, have it on an unpublished site, or put a lock if in the form of a diary.

haha I blog it's cool. It's a way for my family to keep tabs on me per say, since I've moved away to school. Obviously I realize it's public and thus don't write stuff that I don't want the public to see. I have another blog for that ;) I agree with the above guy, it's jsut a way to write down stuff. It's kinda fun to go back and remember what you were up up a year ago or whatever.
