In case you weren't sure - playing with a cigarette lighter while pumping gas = a bad idea.

link to story which says exactly what's below - no more, no less

LA PLATA, N.M. (AP) - A 19-year-old New Mexico woman is hospitalized with burns after catching on fire last night while pumping gas.

Witnesses say Brianna Sanchez was fiddling with a cigarette lighter at a gas station in La Plata and casually filling up her car when flames shot out of the tank.

A person at the scene put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

A spokesman for the San Juan County, New Mexico, sheriff's office calls it a "freak accident"

Sanchez was taken to the hospital with burns to her face and upper torso.

Horrible, but that's just retarded. But maybe she thought the pipes were flame resistant. You know a lot of uneducated people can't really figure these things out. So I guess it's easy to be all arrogant and pass her off, but some peeps don't know.

That still doesn't change the fact that this is retarded. 😀

isn't smoking a bad idea anyways? Don't they have warning signs put up telling you not to smoke around the gas pumps?

I've said it a million times... there are already too damn many warning signs. It's ruining Darwin's work.

Best of all, no matter how many warning signs are put up, people are still stupid and will do stupid things. It's just a shame that it was only flames instead of a full blown explosion in this case.

I suppose it's possible that someone is so amazingly ignorant that they don't realize that gasoline is highly flammable, but it is hard to believe.

A full blown explosion could have injured other people at the station. Other people shouldn't have to get killed because of one person's idiocy.

Unlike in the movies, cars don't explode very often in real life.

The best part of this thread is everybody agrees she's an idiot yet when we've had this conversation before (re. smoking at the gas station) there are plenty of people arguing that those of us who DO heed the signs & avoid unnecessary ignition sources are sheep.

supposedly women are more likely to set off fires at stations in general because they like to get in and out of their car...static😛

Also, FWIW, cigarettes aren't very likely to ignite gasoline vapors (not impossible, just not likely.) You could put out a lit cigarette in a pool of gasoline and it wouldn't ignite (unlike in the movies where the actor just flicks his butt into the puddle to blow up the bad guy.) Open flames: ignite fumes quite well.

I smoke at gas stations but I atleast light in the car. Cigarette ash won't ignite gas, but its silly to sit around flicking a lighter at the pump.

Freak accident?!?!?!? Playing with a lighter while filling up? Sounds like a predictable accident to a normal rational person.
