Reason for the Genesis sedan success in the US

I live in south OC, not all too far from the Hyundai NA HC so I do normally see a large amount of Hyundai's being driven around here with mfg plates (Ive seen a korean market Eqqis before) and have been noticing a lot of Genesis sedans being driven in Irvine and around the area, but rarely do I ever see anywhere else.

I happened to ask my roommate (who happens to be korean) if it had anything to do with the large korean population in Irvine and surrounding areas. He basically said most traditional korean families will support their home economies over anything else if they can (only purchasing samsung electronics, LG appliances, etc) and now that Hyundai is releasing more premium cars in the US they are all trading in their Mercs and BMWs in for Genesis sedans. In fact I counted about 12 of them in the Korean church parking lot near my apartment on a sunday morning. Is there really any truth to this or is he just BSing me?

I just saw a Genesis coupe the other day at the local shopping center, I still have to say it looks a bit garish from the outside, but I guess that's the trend nowadays.

So you're saying... Koreans like to purchase Korean cars?

Isn't that == the Americans liking to buy American cars? This idea of "Patriotism" that has always amazed me when people will buy something knowing that they are blinding themselves from other alternatives.

I'm american but I prefer euro cars? My GF is american and she loves her honda, my roomate is korean and likes his VW, your point?

This coming from someone who was in the group of people who went into a thread about a Korean car and made it into a US vs Japan thread.

Anyways, your friend has a skewed view. It sounds like your area is like driving around some areas of Michigan where you see test mules all the time. So even on a limited production model, they'll see several of them.

Prevelance in one area isn't necessarily indicitive of success. I don't know its actual sales figures though, so it's hard to say without them how well the Genesis is actually doing. The Genesis is a pretty nice car though. It offers a lot for a very good price. Hyundai's quality has also improved a lot in the past few years.

Most asian people tend to drive and prefer asian cars largely Japanese with a growing tendency towards Korean.

I only know 3 Koreans that drive. One has a M3 and a Japanese motorcycle, one has a Nissan, and the other has a little Hyundai.

I'm sure there's something to it. who knows how big the overall effect is, though. I have yet to see a single genesis in real life, fwiw.

Or, the reason for the success of the Genesis is that it looks nice, drives nice, feels nice, is competitively priced, and your friend is full of bologna.

I've seen a number of them in St. Louis (where I'm on a project) and even in SC where I live.

That or German cars. Nothing says you've made it like an expensive German car.

Sorta like how someone use to an insular asian lifestyle only buys and recommends asian cars.

I live in an area with a lot of Koreans, Fort LEE and Palisades PARK. 😉

Many of them drive Korean cars here including Daewoos. If not, then they drive MBs and BMWs.

Depends on, but generally, Korean doesn't prefer driving Korean car. If they do, they came to US recently, or really loyal to Hyundai. But I surely can tell you that most of us (Korean) prefer Japanese and German.

It's just common belief among Korean that those two are best, Korean cars are good for money, and American cars are for those Korean with weird taste.

Oh, BTW, I doubt many Koreans are trading in their MB/BMW/Lexus to Genesis. Believe me. Many, if not all, Koreans believe cars are not just transportation. We believe cars show some kind of prestige, and that's why you see so many Lexus, Mercedes, BMW or Audi in $ 900 rent apartment parking lot.

That or German cars are more fun than boring [but reliable] Japanese cars. (Owned many Japanese). Nothing says generalizations like a JulesMaximus. They just keep on coming.

BTW, not related to this topic but do you have any asian friends? I don't count. I'm just wondering.

Im my apartment complex there are two korean families that live in the units across from me, one traded in their ES for a Genesis and the other their TL for one, shrug, it might just be localized thing.

There is 760Li V-12 driven by an old korean lady here, that does jive with your statement, haha

Well, probably they got a great deal on Genesis. And for family car, obviously, Genesis is better choice than ES or TL as it's bigger.

Don't get me wrong. Genesis is a great car. But there's no correlation between Genesis and Korean, at least yet. They just get Genesis because they found it a good car, not because they are Korean. Korean in general just love to drive car other than Korean -- if they can afford one. (You will be just amazed if you visit Seoul. Ferrari, Lambo, Bentley every corner, literally)

I agree with Jules, but I do think Subarus are very exciting--the Imprezas are more example than a Toyota Celica. Or even a Honda SI. :Q

i know a bunch of koreans (mostly college students) they drive: a cr-v, cr-v, 08 accord, 06 civic, 03 sonata, nissan rogue, genesis.

Probabily a part of it, but the low cost and great features help as well...

Heck if Amercian cars interested me again I would love one, but they just don't

Crazy. I know white Americans with these same vehicles. Absolutely wild how that happens.

My wife's uncle/aunt just purchased a Genesis. (Wife is Korean). I must say, it's a fine automobile.

Maybe one day they'll make a AWD version of the sedan
