Reason for fps limit in Win2k

I'm running the following:

Win2k SP2
AMD 1.2 @ 1.33GHz
GeForce2 GTS 32MB Detonator v12.41, v11.01, v6.31, v6.50
384MB PC133

When I run Unreal Tournament in Win2k, it max's out at 75 fps. If I run the same hardware in Windows 98, there's no defined cap on the fps. It caps out at around 145+. In Windows 2000, it's like there's a governor or something. It cuts off the top fps at 75.004 or something like that. Never hits 76.

Does anyone know the reason for this? I assume it's something to do with the video drivers for the GeForce2 in Win2k. But, is there a fix? Or am I stuck at that with Win2k?

Thanks for any help.

Its kind of good that the fps is limited so u don't have to waste CPU power, or does the CPU still do the same amount of work and some frames just aren't rendered?

I am assuming it saves CPU work... but what exactly will your CPU need to do during a game besides run the game?

no it isn't. It has nothing to do with visual quality. Vsync locks the refresh rate ie syncs the refresh rate to the Monitors current Vsync setting. 75Hz is 75fps or 75 screen updates per second.

Frame rate caps are used for net play. If the screen is being re-drawn faster then the game is receiving data from the server, odd stuff will begin happening.

Refresh sync DOES improve visual quality, it prevents the "scissoring" effect of the screen refreshing in the middle of a rendering frame. IMHO, if it never drops from 75fps, don't worry about it, you'll have a hard time seeing the difference anyway.

v-sinc doesn't improve visual quality, but turning it off can lead to degraded quallity.

The CPU could be running @home or RC5 while playing Q3

thanks for the link but for the love of god why the hell do i have to wait in a line of 1034 people to get my 100k file i HATE fileplanet

LOL...yah that is a bit irritating. Try Tweakfiles.com instead.

Just curious how this would fix my Direct3d problem?

I know my monitor is running at 85Hz. I've manually changed it in the adaptor properties, and the monitor customization screen shows 85Hz as the refresh rate. The frame rate under direct3d maxs out at 75.00x. Also, if it was a refresh problem, wouldn't it occur in OpenGL as well? I'm asking because I'm still learning🙂

Thanks guys. The w2k refresh patch (after some tweeking and crashing) helped with the problem. Though I stated above that I knew I was running at 85Hz, that wasn't the case when the screen res (and refresh) changed as I entered Unreal Tournament. Now, when I play UT, my res is 1024x768 and my refresh is 120Hz 🙂 So, my max fps have also increased to 120.0x 🙂

Again, thanks!!!

One more thing. Is there anyway you can turn off vSync in Direct3D? I realize now that the reason there was no hard limit for OpenGL (I hit 215fps 🙂) is because I disabled vSync. But, I can not find a setting to disable it in Direct3D.

Thanks again!
