Reason #83479598345 why I love Costco: Contacts that "fell off the back of a truck"

So I was at Costco yesterday upgrading my membership to executive and getting a new prescription for contacts. If anybody has ever considered getting their eye exam done at Costco, I'd highly recommend it. Whole process took under 30 mins, 75 bucks for contact lens exam.

Anyway, towards the end of the exam, the optometrist asks me "how much cash do you have on you". At first I was perplexed. "I have check or credit card" I responded. He quickly retorted "no no no, how much cash do you have"

"10 bucks" I reply. Inside, I'm all kinds of WTF

At this point, he has one of those trays of contacts in front of him. You know, the giant trays with like 100 individual contacts. He says "I can get you a much better price on contacts than outside". No stranger to shadiness (shady recognize shady?), we agree on a cash price for 4 boxes of contacts + a few extras. Needless to say, I have 14 pairs of contacts and no retail boxes for them.

I feel mildly dirty inside.

On a random note, I am now -4.25/-3.5

A doctor is poor enough he needs to sell stuff off the back of a truck?

Who was he? Zoidberg?

They always give you a box of contact lens solution + contact cases. It's not like the exam room is surrounded by glass walls

Acuvue Advance expire in 2009 =P Same lenses I've been using for years. If they're good enough to give to every patient that walks through the door, they're good enough for me!

Go back and get me some boxes of the 3.5's and we'll discuss your fee. ;) (I just opened my last box of Acuvue Advances)

What he means is how did you get past the reciept check?

Also, did the employee pocket the cash or actually create a real transaction for it?

Nice. I just had an eye exam from Costco on Friday. $108 for a years worth of contacts. Not terrible.

Oh and I did get 5 free bottles of lens solution for free, so that was a bonus.

Costco doesn't check for receipts if all you did was go to the optometrist....it's not like 14 pairs of contacts are really hard to hide anyway.

And if you REALLY think about that second question....

They weren't stolen, the lens mfg give them tons of "trail" pairs to give to people to sued them into buying that brand of lens. Do you really think it cost them $100 to make little sheets of plastic? 1 sale pays the materials and labor cost for probably 50 lenses.
