I use to live in Almaden which is nestled right up to the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The problem is that they are building more homes up there which is starting to infringe on the Coyotes domain. I wouldn't doubt that someday they might even see a Mountain Lion roaming that area.
BTW, NorCal is great, San Jose just sucks. Anyplace that has too many peoiple sucks. I use to live there when there were less than 100,00 people and it was awesome. Now that there is almost a million people living there and the whole place is built up the quality of life has really gone downhill.

Consider this, a bill to allow the hunting of mountain lions was voted down largely because of the following:
People in counties with approximately 0 mountain lions (like SF) thought they should be saved.
There wasn't a hard limit on the number (Anyone heard of the Fish and Game dept.?)

Man you think that is bad you should have seen what lengths people went to to get rid of the Sea Lions in Seattle. They were messing with the salmon run and needed to go. They tried cages, firecrackers everything. After they managed to capture some and transport them away they would just swim back. Why they didn't just shoot them is beyond me.

It may be natural, but when people who sell their teeny little condo in the city for $1,000,000 and buy a mansion in the woods are shocked because there is *gasp* wildlife. Well... Sometimes I just have to roll my eyes at them.
We will always have to share the world with other species. We came in and changed their home environment and you are shocked when they adapt to it? How dare they! It's the way of the world, and we have to adapt to them too. Simply killing them off isn't the solution.

A anecdote from one of Bill Bryson's books keeps popping into my head (from "A Walk in the Woods," I think). It was something along the lines of, if you gathered the entire world population in one place and gave everyone a small shelter, they would fit into an area the size of texas.

I posted that once, though I incorrectly said each person would get an acre 😱 It is interesting though when you think about it. The fact is that most of the complainers are those folks who have never ventured outside of the city. They are oblivious to amount of land (unused, at that) that this country has. The amounts of money the government pays so farmers WON'T grow crops. The amount of food aid we send to other countries because we still make too much.

Lots of info there but they never cover the fresh water shortage that we are starting to see all throughout the world. Without some major improvements in desalination technology we are going to run out of aquifers that we can tap. The US is having less troubles than a lot of other nations but take look at Lake Chad. I forget which river in China (I think the Yellow River) runs dry in some places because all of the water flow is diverted to irrigate crops, and that is a *massive* river.
Just because there is enough land area to support more people doesn't mean that we should. I think it has been calculated that the optimal sustainable human population on Earth should be around 10 Billion. At current growth reates we are going to shoot way past that.

There was a small mountain lion scare in the Black Hills (South Dakota) this summer. It is due mostly in part to the number of people building farther back in to the forest. I don't think there are any more lions than usual, it's just that people are starting to notice the impact since they are living closer to it.
Now don't get me wrong, having grown up in coyote country I have no problem with shooting one that is being a pest. It's when people want to adopt an extermination program as part of everyday life that I start to have a problem with it. There are a lot of people from urban areas that have unreasonable expectations when they move in to an area like that.
A lot of human development is unnatural...
there is nothing natural about a car, a PC, etc.
The coyotes are living in San Jose...they have adapted and are managing to flourish despite human interaction.
Then people bitch about the problem...you drive off the local wildlife, feel really bad when one species goes extinct, then complain when other species manages to adapt.
