At this point, to see if it could be done. By creating something not seen before, you have a chance to witness processes that may be hidden or throw light on how normal development works. Pretty much the goal of any pure research project is to increase the knowlege of how things work. Someone else may one day take this and apply the principles learned here. Note- this is not a comment as to the morality of the issue, but why it would be done.

I don't know exactly how I feel about this sort of thing - it's definately borderline.
But his motives seem unrelated to his research and the result. How does creating a mixed-sex organism cure disease? Was he hoping to find out that the male genes cured the female ones?

I'm stupid.

The chimaeric condition exists in grown adults as well.

I wish these guys would do something useful with all the brains they have. Why do they want to continue to try to beat nature?

I would agree that the world would be in an uproar if they try to give birth to one of these.

cool!

/marks this off the list of ones life goals. (someone beat me to it)

but why did they destroy it, they should let the thing be born. that would be cool

Because, of course, ANY baby born like that would be a sick and perverted individual.

I see nothing wrong with the practical applications of the research. Assuming it really can "cure" genetic defects, it would be really cool for people who pass on defective genes to their children, but want them to live a normal life.

If you had a choice, wouldn't you want your children to be able to live a normal life?

It's not as if the mixed a lizard embryo with a human embryo.

What's the big deal?

This kind of stuff has links to cures for all sorts of diseases. The more you understand the human development, the easier it is to creates cures.

The problem with experimenting with human genetics is where do we draw the line? The benefits have huge potential, but where does this type of research go over the edge? We are experimenting with embryos now, but the next step would be to let these embryos mature. How will these experiments effect the life of the child? How would you feel if you were told that you were the result of genetic experimentation?

The problem is that there are some very brilliant people out there with no morals. The research they perform goes unchecked, and there is no telling what they will do next.

Actually on my home world we are composed of two completely different life forms that fused to evolve as one. Seriously.

Do you, by any chance, live on an old Cardassian space station?

Ok, that was bad. But it was too easy.

Seriously, I have to disagree with them creating an embryo of a human like this. Once the cells reach the embryonic stage, it's a person, and messing with human cells and allowing them to develop to that point is the same as experimenting on infants to me.

Mess with the cells, but never let them develop to that point. If they want to play with embryos, get some mice.
