In the snow :Q

I got stuck in the snow 4 times today while driving my car to work. Once outside my house, needed assistance to move my car out of somebody else's driveway, and 3 times in the car park at the site I?m currently working at.

Damn fucking frustrating, I tell you!

There was on average around 10-12 inches of snow fall, I'd say.

Balls, m8. Been driving mine in the snow all week. Not got stuck once. 😉

Just feather it and let the M-diff do the hard work.
 
If you've got 8-10" of snow, it doesn't matter if you're FWD, RWD, or AWD, you will get stuck if you don't have a lot of weight and ground clearance. Lucky me, I've got both. :laugh:
 
It sucks, and in the UK I doubt you have any snow clearance right now, so not much you can do. I got stuck at the lights on a hill some weeks back. I have FWD but my tires weren't great. It was fun waving people to pass me as for the life of me my car wouldn't go up that hill.
 
There are a few snow plow machines on the Motorway network, and most nights they have been salting them, too. The problem is GETTING to the motorway. The regular streets are snowed up.
 
my neighbor's M3 has been sitting covered with snow in his driveway for like 3 days straight now. Poor guy. X5 / xdrive (even with 315width rears) ftw. His summer performance tires probably don't help either. 😀

I'm guessing you probably don't have snow tires on there, which in that kind of snow would help you a lot. Although I've also read that, that M3 is a bit scary to drive in the snow. Good luck! 😛

You don't need ground clearance in 8-10" of snow. I've driven through unplowed roads with 12" of snow in a FWD car plenty of times without getting stuck.

A good set of snow tires and some weight over the drive wheels is all you need.

Maybe if its light fluffy snow you can plow through that amount, provided you aren't on a lot of hills and have good tires...but if its even moderately heavy stuff its just going to pack up under the car and bottom you out. The best snow tires in the world aren't going to do crap if they're spinning in the air.

If I were the OP, I'd buy a snow shovel to dig out underneath the car when it got stuck and put it in the trunk!
 
I find it amusing.... I was in a raid group with a British woman (still living in England) and she commented at one point after the raid about how there hasn't been much snow in England lately. The next day you guys got all that snow :laugh:.

I drive 335i with Dunlop M3's snow tires around Chicago area with no problem. You got to remember that you only have about 5" of clearance though. It is not a subaru but it gets me to work just fine.
 
No trouble driving an LS V8 (RWD) with all-season touring tires that turn as hard as guys in the babe thread. I do have to turn off the traction control on take offs though.
 
My RWD does fine. I prefer it over FWD to be honest.

Now when it gets deep any car has trouble, packs up and bottoms the car out. I've run into this a couple times. Weight and good tires do no good if the snow is dense enough.

I kind of want a 4x4 SUV and I'm not even an SUV person really. There have been a few occasions this winter that it would have come in handy.
 
My 86 Nissan 200SX wasn't so great in the snow, but my 77 Grand Marquis was fine other than the occasional fishtailing. I'll leave the VWs out of the equation because they're rear-engined 😉

I'll have to say that the Prius I own is the worst vehicle I've ever driven in the snow including my old '81 Camaro. How do you exactly rock a vehicle out of being stuck with an electronically shifting trans???

And, conversely my '98 F150 4X4 OFF ROAD is one of the best. It beats out the '03 Trailblazer 4X4, 2000 Tahoe 4X4, and '97 Blazer 4X4 I've owned probably because of the Michelin LTX M/S's I put on it. I've always been a proponent of SUV's over pickups in the snow, but this truck with its 6.5' bed loves the snow.

I've never taken the Z28 out in the snow.

 
Anything over 2" of snow would permanently ground my v8 CLK. Even with traction control and high gear, the thing wouldn't move (summer 265s in the rear didn't help...).

My A6 hasn't gotten stuck yet, and that's with bald Pirelli P0s

You mean the 2-ton GMC Topkick trucks (and the like)? They've got 7-10" of clearance easy.
 
You suck. Jokes.

That's the nature of RWD. They spin easily in the snow, less traction in slippery conditions, etc etc. Were you using snow tires? If not, that's another reason why you got stuck.
 
It isn't so much snow that is the problem w/ RWD cars, but ice. You can get plenty of traction in the snow, but not with ice. You just have to know what you are doing.

Find an empty parking lot and do some donuts. Just make sure not to hit a snow bank, they can do some pretty good damage to a car at a low amount of speed.
