Ok, here's the situation:

With Winamp 2, sound only comes out of the front speakers, but with Winamp 3 the rears play.

I know the obvious answer to to make sure the Directsound plugin is check in WMP2 and that hardware acceleration is checked, but I have done both of those, and I still only get sound out of the front 2 speakers.

Anybody have any guesses as to why this would be?

I'm using the Soundstorm audio on my nForce 2 board (Epox 8rda+ to be specific)

Thanks

Did you configure the Speaker Setup tab in the NVIDIA nForce Control Panel to have 4 speakers and not 2?

Yep. Everything (in nVidia control panel as well as Windows) is configured for a 5.1 setup. I've read elsewhere it may be a problem with the nForce drivers? Not really sure. It'd just like to have music coming out of my rear speakers

control panel > sound and audio > speaker settings > advanced > speaker setup > 5.1 surround sound.

just checking, as this one gets past a lot of people, and is the only way I know to get more channels out of on-board audio to winamp/media player

Yep, done that. I get rear sound in games, and like I said above, with Winamp 3, but just not with Winamp 2. Can't figure it out

strange, I use 2.81 and don't have any problems out of it, but I only use quadrophonics, I don't have a true 5.1 setup, and beside I actully use my mic port anyway so 5.1 would be pointless unless I used a pci sound card.
hope you get it figured out.... does it work with media player? it could simply be a limitation of the software and not the configuration.
