If you're going to ask them for money, use it to fix the car.
If you don't care about fixing the bumper, then don't ask them for money.

This is not an opportunity to profit off of someone else's mistake.

then you're an idiot.

The car is now worth less than it was before it got hit.

you'd be surprised how much damage a rear-end job could cause... I watched a dateline (or similar show) special on it. Luxury vehicles we purposely hit and priced out to well over $1k per hit and there wasn't much visually damage... they still wanted to remove the entire part and replace it, and then some.

At any rate, doesn't sound like you'll use the compensation money to replace the bumper. So you should use it here for your Maxima. (heh shameless plug) :D

I'll semi go with MrChad. I don't think he has any moral obligation to repair the car. He can do with it what he wants.

If it were me and was a beater/driver it wouldn't bother me and I'd feel better not taking the money. If the car was already pretty much worthless and didn't hurt resale, I'd be nice about it. Cause less grief on everyone.

As has been said, there is no moral obligation to use the money to repair the damage done to the car. The daughter caused the OP a loss of value in his vehicle. It doesn't matter if the OP cares or not about the vehicle itself, the daughter is still obligated to pay for the loss of value that her actions caused. She messed up, she must accept the consequences.

Take the cash and do whatever with it. Is the bumper plastic? Have you tried having the dent popped out with a heat gun?

From one Maxima owner to another, please get your car fixed. You should be ashamed of yourself for considering driving around town in a beat up Maxima. If you want to do that, you should go get a Sentra or an Altima.

Actually, I think a few mins with a heat gun and a good buffing and you probably wouldn't even notice the damage, but thats just me.

I have a HVLP sprayer and air compressor in my garage and have painted pearl paint before, so if push comes to shove, I'll redo that section of the bumper.
