Almost titled this topic, "When Beaters Collide!" :p

Sitting on the exit ramp, listening to Howard Stern, all was well... BAM! :Q

WTF! I look in the rear view and see an old pickup jacked up against my hind end. He backs up and my tail drops down a few inches. I got out to see if the bumper was still attached... it was. The guy hangs out the window and says to pull into the gas station around the corner. After seeing the lack of damage, I waved him off and said, forget it. Got to work on time and I still can't see the slightest hint of damage. Trunk opens and closes... screw it. What would you have done?

Simple, if nothing happened to my car, I wouldn't bother being an asshole about it...

Stuff happens, but if I didn't damage your car, you did the right thing. Good to know we have a few people who aren't assholes anymore.

I probably would have done the same thing (assuming no damage). I might have pulled into the gas station, looked under the car, and then waved him off. But if there was not substantial harm, I would be happy and just let the matter drop.

Nothing to see but a neglected old chrome bumper. The car is at work now, anyway. I took the owner's Chrysler LHS home, since I'm on call tonight.

He must not have hit you very hard.

Yep yep. If you find any internal damage, or some dent/scratch you overlooked before, you get nothing.

same thing probably if nothing is wrong with it...
speaking of accidents, i almost had one today there was a big ass SUV in front of me and i couldnt see around, and the driver was goofin off and i guess the cars were puttin on their brakes infront, so he SLAMMED on his brakes, i was following close but not tailgating him, if the fast lane had cars in it at that split second i would have put the nose of my car into the trunk of that expedition or something. I looked as i passed and I missed clipping my mirror on his left rear quarterpanel by a half inch. :Q:Q:Q

Glad to hear it wasnt a bad crunch though for ya. :)

I would have called the cops. Even though I might have thought there was no damage, there's just too much chance that the other guy will suddenly "find" some damage on his car and try to claim you backed into him or some crap like that...

Of course, I drive a 2002 Civic, and the whole rear end of my car probably would have collapsed on itself :)

If it had been an eensie car, he would have mashed it's trunk lid, but good! Our bumpers must have been aligned well and hit square. My car is on it's last legs anyway...

Edit: His truck looked pretty old too. The guy looked halfway decent, though. Didn't appear to be drunk or anything.

After seeing some of the pictures of the land yachts you drive Ornery, I'm not sure I would have even gotten out to check for damage. ;)

I did the same about a month ago. This stupid girl on a cell phone hits me in the butt. I was tempted to do the grab the neck thing, or start screaming, just to teach her a lesson, but she beat me to it. She just started bawling her eyes out repeating I'm sorry over & over. I looked at my car, there was no real damage, just a mark which I buffed out with polish. So I told her she a prime example of why cell phone laws are going in effect, got in my car & left.

You don't need a seat belt. This is a '75 Volvo. The only cars we have to fear are DeLoreans and other older Volvos. Everything else on the road we'll cut right through!

If I was in a beast like that, I'd probably have done the same thing you did...

Reminds me of earlier this summer a neighbor backed her white '02 Jetta into my gf's '88 Camry (the kind with the huge black bumpers?) while we were sitting on the porch watching. She barely tapped her but my gf was like "HOLY CRAP SHE JUST HIT MY CAR!"
She calmed down after I pointed out that her car would probably have taken the neighbor's bumper right off without even getting a scuff mark :)

I sure do miss real metal and chrome bumpers, a few small taps on parallel parking won't hurt a thing. Heck, in Mexico, they do it all the time, tap parallel parking. Back up, tap.. foward, tap.... a few more times, and tah dah, no skill needed.

I had someone rear-end me in my Porsche once. We both pulled over, looked it over & there was hardly any damage at all. My car's got these huge rubber pads on the bumper....just rub it a little & you can give them their paint back ;). Anyways I just took down their info in case there was some underlying damage or something like that, but there wasn't, so it's all good.

BTW, I was stopped at a stoplight with the clutch in but the brakes off (it was level & there wasn't another car in sight for me to get pushed into) & they must have not realized I was stopped untill it was too late. They left monster skid marks (Dodge Caravan) and were almost stopped when they bumped me. They did end up bumping me through the intersection, but as I said earlier, there was nobody else in sight. It was some other high school girl who had just gotten her licence like a week earlier. She was scared enough when I got out of the car that I didn't even make a big deal of it.

About 4 months ago I had a Pontiac Grand Prix hit me from behind doing about 5-6 MPH. He just went under mu bumper like It was not even there, while my hitch rode up his hood and left 3 long dents. His front end hit my rear diff cover and dented it.

It was a 17 year old who just wasn't paying attention. We traded info and drove our seperate ways. I called my insurance company and explained what happened just in case the kid tried to pull some funny stuff.

Then I bought a new reinforced cover for by Dana 70. Gave me an excuse :)

I rear-ended a Toyota 4Runner in my Honda Accord a couple months ago. There was no damage to his truck but my damage was $1700. I got a new aftermarket hood and grille. I gave him all my information and he said he'd call me back if he found any damage, but I never heard from him. So I guess I got off lucky because I didn't have to notify my insurance company.

If a half-ton pick-up rear-ended me, It may well have totaled my car. The bumper would hit the window on my hatch and probably take out the c-pillars with it
