I would like to do a few things on the computer (online poker) at work that I'm sure my employer would look down on. If I used realVNC to access my home computer to do this would the network admins have any clue what was going on other then I was running realVNC? Also how secure is realVNC?

realVNC is not secure, I reccomend SSH tunneling.

Asking people to help you cheat your employer isn't really cool.

If they would frown on doing it on their local system, what makes you think they would frown any less on it if you set up a VNC to your home computer to do it?

If it was harmless you would run it on your work computer, or ask your local IT guys for info on how to get it working.

Even if you did an encrypted tunnel via SSH to your home pc, there would still be traffic. Then it comes down to whether the network overlords at your company are monitoring the amt of data being transferred. They may not be able to decipher it, but they would see something moving i/o of your ip.

Not just traffic, a *lot* of traffic. Even if it was encrypted, the network admins would probably wonder what was going on.

I did this sometimes at work, well not poker, but if it were slow at work and I was surfing I would open VNC and view any NWS links on the remote computer. They dont mind us surfing, but sometimes the proxy logs are reviewed for shady sites.

If I were your IT manager, I would not allow this... you are connecting to your home computer which may not be secure (maybe more secure, maybe less secure then company standards) and you are opening a tunnel into the corporate environment that could be a security risk...

I would not have it.
