RealOne Player on Mandrake

Hi all,

After finally getting Mandrake 9 going on my system, I downloaded the RealOne player for Linux (6Mb .bin file). However, clicking on this file does nothing, it's not an RPM (as far as I can see), can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong here?

Thanks!

It may not have the execute bit set. Call up a command line, and cd to the directory where you saved the file. Then run it by typing sh YOURFILENAME.bin.

Very helpfull.
I thought it was, Linux isn't Windows. There is a time and place for gui's, but I personally don't believe that a gui should be used to install software. I don't know, maybe it's just me...

Stupid remark! If you know how to do what he asked smart man why did not you give him some advice. This is a big problem with Linux to many smart? people with no advice, just wise remarks.

Where in my post did you see where I mentioned your name?? So what if you have a problem with the way the person asked the question, Why do you insist on being the know all and end all for advice here relating to how to request help. His choise of media players is his choise, why do you insult his choice just because you dont like it. I seems that TheOmegaCode figured out something that could be some help and did not berate the poster for his choise of software or for his choise of words to explain his problem.

No where sir.

I dont.

I inserted my opinion because I can. I would not hesitate to help someone with products because I do not like those products, which can be seen in many of the Windows threads I try to help out in.

I apologize. I was in the wrong. I admit I misread part of the original post and I couldl have easily answered the question now that I re-read it. My opinions will be kept out of all technical and non-technical posts in the future and I will keep my comments on my ability to help to myself. Bleep is the man, pm him from now on everyone 🙂

Right, so it seems that a simple question about installing a media player under a new OS (for me) has caused a virtual flame war.

So....

skriefal: Thank you for your advice, I hadn't checked that. Seeting the exec bit allowed it to extract and install itself, excellent. By far the most sensible piece of advice here.

TheOmegaCode: Wow, really? Guess I'm really dumb. Gee, sorry about that. There's now a big sign on my wall saying "You are running LINUX!". I'm well aware of the way in which software is installed under Linux, but I've only been running Mandrake for four days now and everyone needs help sometimes. I'll bet you didn't know how to work Linux 100% the second you installed it- I've been running all versions of Windows under the sun for 6-7 years now and this is my first adventure into Open-Source OS's. On a slightly different note, thank you for the FAQ link. Most useful.

Bleep: Thanks for that, it's an attitude I'm coming across more and more these days- OS snobbery. Sigh.

Now, unless there's any more flaming or bitching to be done, can we get back to talking about what this forum was set up for? That's right, solving people's computer problems. Thanks to skriefal (actually, I right-clicked -> Properties, set the exec bit lol, Windows habit) the problem is now fixed.

chmod 100 filename.bin would also have changed permissions to executable for the owner (in case you dont know the cli way, not an insult, just throwing it out there).

HAHA and its kind of funny, real.com will not easily let me download the Linux version, I cant get away from the Mac OS X version.

You said, I clicked on it, and nothing happened. My point is/was that Linux operates very differently from windows. Yes, as time goes on, Linux distro's become more GUI centric than ever before, but that does not dispute the fact that Linux is deeply based on a CLI. That was not ment as an attack on your intelligence, if you received it as such, I apologize.

Heh, I still can't do about 60% of things in Linux, but I try. When I first installed Linux (Mandrake) I found it buggy, and quickly promptly removed it withing a week. Up until about two weeks ago, I hadn't touched Linux since. I'd been using FreeBSD, which is a nice OS, if you want to compile from source.

No prob, you might have been able to see it yourself, if someone would just restick it :|:disgust:
