Really worth waiting for the 6p successor?

Currently looking to switch from AT&T to T mobile to save some cash, and get more data for less $$. I currently am in an S6 and really not a fan of all the garbage Samsung and AT&T standard apps that come on it, plus the S6 got really slow and needed a cache wipe after about 6 months.

I know the 7p or whatever it's going to be called is coming out probably in about 2.5 months. However, reading leaked specs, it doesn't seem like it's going to be super impressive. Slightly faster CPU/GPU, more RAM, slightly better camera, etc etc. I'm not really a super user of cell phones, I root and ROM'ed my last HTC, but I did not touch my S6. I mainly just text here and there, use my phone for directions to places, and play Pokemon, Clash of Clans and watch Youtube videos.

The kicker is in order to switch and get the S6 paid for (still owe like $400) I need to buy a new phone from them. Should I wait and get the next Nexus or just switch now?

T-Mobile didn't offer the 6P, so if the next Nexus is similar then I don't see how you will be able to buy one from them.

Regarding waiting, even if you're not going to get the 7P or whatever it'll be called, at the very least its release will drop the value/sell price of the 6P.

Eeek, that's no good. The only way they pay off the current phone for you is by getting a new phone from them. Guess I'll either be going new iphone ( mehhhh...) or S7 then.

Yup, Nexus phones are pretty much sold by google directly and that's it. No carrier options

This S7 is a good phone, but you can also wait for the new Note which is due soon.

I've never really looked into the note. Is it just a larger version of the S with the little pen thingy?

Pretty much, yeah. You could wait for the Note 7 announcement on Aug. 2.

I also carrier leased a phone in the past, and I'll never do it again. I'd rather just buy my phones outright, since it gives me the freedom to sell/buy something on a whim. Carriers implement bloatware (especially difficult to remove on Android), and usually slow down updates. They can also do shifty things such as not supporting VoLTE/WiFi calling on non-carrier branded phones (AT&T).

In my eyes, I'd steer towards an iPhone or Nexus phone, just for speed of updates. Samsung's offering are always super tempting, but I wish Google brought back the GPE program.

Just to clarify for those who find this thread via Google or something: the 820 SoC alone is worth waiting for a 6P replacement. The SoC was the worst part about the 6P.

In the Note series I would wait if you like the edge screens.

The 6P's implementation of the 810 isn't bad as others (ex: One M9), but it's still a weak spot. I'd say the biggest weak spot of the 6P in my experience is the poor battery life. I'm lucky to get 3 hours of SoT after the July update (it was 2 hours prior the update).

You could always get whatever new phone, immediately sell it and use that money to then pay it off. Then go buy whatever phone you want. Bit of a hassle though.

Yeah, that's why I wanted to get out of the s6 in the first place. My update to marshmallow was 6 months late, and all the bloatware on it is insane. However, it's just not a great financial choice to buy with out a carrier (due to them paying my debt off in full).

Besides, don't they give you the option to pay it off anytime you want, kind of like any type of regular loan? That way, say I get a Note 7 in a few weeks when I switch to T mobile, then I pay it off in full, sell it when the Nexus upgrade comes out, then buy that from Google outright. Win, win, no?

Edge screen is okay I guess. Never really thought it was reason to get the edge over the regular though.

See above, that's basically the plan.

They give you 2 options for pay off: 1) Pay it off completely or 2) Pay it off enough so that you can trade it in for a new leased device. The good news is that it's a 0% loan. Having said that, $400 can get you a nice new or used phone.

Your initial goal is to save money monthly by switching from AT&T to T-mo. How much are you paying now per month if you don't mind me asking? How much is the T-mo plan? Have you looked into corporate discounts w/ AT&T?

Right, it's a 0% loan set forth by the terms you chose, ie 6 months, 12 month, 24 month, and so on. At any given time into my "loan", I can pay off in full and own the phone outright.

Correct. I currently am paying about $95 a month for the s6 and 2GB of data. On T mobile, if I were to get say the Note 7 (over 24 months), I'd be looking at about $85 per month for 6GB of data. Once I paid off the Note 7 and sold it (net $0 cost to me once I recoup the money), I'd then buy a new nexus outright and bring that to over T mobile. Bill at that point would then go down to $65.

Same here, glad I am not the only one. Seems like everyone on reddit/android forums get 5-6 hours SOT. Do you game? I probably game for 40% of my SOT, and I only get about 3~ hours from 100%-10%. If I do not game, I get about 4-5 hours SOT. This is better then my Nexus 5, and even my Nexus 6, which was a pretty shit battery. I would never make 2 hours SOT with that thing.

I still love my 6P, and wouldn't trade it for any other phone on the market today. I love the screen size compared to the 6, and it is just a bit smaller it fits my hand better. I also love USB C and the finger print sensor, very quick and accurate. I have had it since day 1, so about 9-10 months now.

How do you think the Note 7 would stack up against the 6P w.r.t. battery life?

Now that I play pokemon, it's not uncommon to have my screen on for hours at a time.

It should be better. Even my note 4 without Marshmallow had better battery life than my 6p does.

The 6p has decent idle battery life, but that's because of doze and not because of the phone itself. Once doze is taken out of the picture and you're talking about actually USING your phone, the 6p battery life is the weakest part of the phone IMO. It's not a HUGE difference, but I do feel like I got a bit of a downgrade in that aspect compared to my Note 4. The Note 7 will have a more efficient SOC, and have a larger battery.

I game about 15-20 mins. a day. I'm fairly sure my poor battery life is due to my Pebble Time. If I have BT disabled, I seem to get much better battery life (4 hours of SoT). I've also had the Nexus 5, and it had poor battery life as well. I'd love something with the internals of the 6P fit into a Nexus 5 body.

I agree with you, despite the battery issue, the 6P is an excellent phone. I'm actually considering keeping it for more than a year as my daily driver (I tend to swap phones often).

I see. Will be interesting to see how Nexus successor does with non idle battery life.

So announcement for Note 7 is Aug 2, but when will they hit the shelves?

I don't know, I BT play audio for about 30 minutes in the morning and its still at 100%, and when I leave work to go home, it never drops a % in that 30%. For me, I don't think BT is my issue.

I hear the note is better, but I never licked the skinned android os's, especially touchwiz.

Yeah, I also stream about 20-30 minutes of BT audio to my car everyday. The difference between BT audio and Pebble is that I'm constantly getting notifications to my Pebble, and the Pebble is syncing health data back to the 6P.

Interesting, I always thought BT to watch stuff wasn't that bad. When I had my moto 360 I only lost about 3-4% battery throughout the day with it connected.

With my current s6,I can drive home from work about 40 mins streaming BT music to my car, and it uses maybe 5% battery. It's pretty good I think.

Oh, will Note 7 get the fast charging like the Galaxy?

For sure. Maybe USB3.1 too.

That will be quite nice. Even though it's a minor inconvenience, transferring GB's of music via usb 2.0 kind of sucks. Once I build a new PC, I can finally take advantage of that then.

How quickly will Spigen and others be supplying cases? Is there anything I could pre order on Amazon?

Spigen will be quick! They sometimes get prototypes sent to them for them to design cases for it. I know they did that in the past. As long The new note doesn't have different versions out. I say that because on the note4 release Verizon did something weird to their version so the cases ended up blocking a port or something. It took a little bit to figure it out. So they pulled the cases and 2 versions came out.

I'm a note4 w/ tmobile. Phone is decent. Quickcharge is nice. Just to give you a clue on how fast tmobile is if you want to hold on to phones, we just got official marshmellow not too long ago. Doesn't matter to me because i'm rooted and ROMed. Phone is large but if your thinking of getting a 6p or "7p" they should all be on par. I need a phone the size and spec of a s7 but not a samsung phone.

Nexus is rumored to have 2 phone releases kinda like the 5x and 6p. But the 5x was like 3 tiers lower then the 6p.
