Really weird RAM problem during gaming

Well, I pretty much only play one game, and it's Medieval II Total War. Before I had 3 Gigs of RAM, 2 x 1GB of OCZ Platinum and 1 x 512 MB of HyperX and 1x 512 MB of Corsair XMS. Everything ran great and all was well. But however when I take out the 2 512MB sticks the game doesn't seem to run at all, it sort of loads, hiccups, and then crashes... I was told earlier to make sure to set the RAM settings under BIOS, not just use "auto", so I did that, but it didn't seem to help. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Weird. I would try each stick one at a time and also recheck the ram settings in the bios again.

hmm, ok so I got it to work with just the 2 x 1GB sticks of RAM, but I had to turn the RAM speed down to 133Mhz and lower the latencies from the manufacture's recommended of 3-3-3-8 to 2.5-2-2-7
