Ok, I had a working system running two IDE hard drives along with an IDE DVD-ROM and a SCSI CD-R. I finally got around to changing out the SCSI controller to an Ultra2 and was planning on reinstalling Windows on my new 10K rpm UW SCSI drive. I also installed my Plextor UW 40x CD-ROM and left the DVD-ROM on the secondary IDE channel. I took the IDE drives offline for now (system config at bottom).
Well, I tried a couple things to install Windows and finally came up with a doozie of an error situation. When I choose the "Boot from SCSI CD-ROM" option provided by the adapter or when I attempt to boot from the DVD-ROM, the system goes to the screen where it lists all the drives, processor, memory, IRQs (big thing, no idea what it's called). Then, when it normally says "Checking for boot record from floppy...ok" followed by "Checking for boot record on fixed disk" (or something like that), it DOES output those messages, but LOOPS CONTINUOUSLY (repeating the messages in infinite scrolling)! It is accessing the hard disk when it does this (LED is lit).
Now, I can boot normally with a floppy and can access the hard disk. I changed the BIOS boot options to use CD-ROM and SCSI, no floppy. What in the heck is going on with the looping? Anyone ever seen this one before? It's new to me.
System:
MSI 6309 motherboard, 2000 BIOS
PIII 700@933MHz, 256MB RAM
ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon
SB Live X-Gamer
3Com 10/100 PCI NIC
Initio Ultra2 SCSI LVD PCI adapter
Western Digital Enterprise 18GB SCSI-2 LVD drive
Plextor 40x UW CD-ROM
Phillips 5x DVD-ROM (rebadged Toshiba)
Floppy and other assorted general peripherals
