2 problems lets describe them and please help.

#1
Friend just got a cable connection, installing to an old k6 233 with win98[fresh install]. The network card is an isa 10/100 3com[cable company provided]. The installed and has no conflicts and device manager says everythins is fine. The cable gives a static ip so the ip,subnet, gateway, dns is all setup as static not using dhcp. Try to use the net and nothing. Removed and reinstalled card still nothing. Tried different isa slots nothing. Tried using pci ethernet card from my comp with same settings nothing. Used same setting with my comp and my buddies new comp[k7 700] and it works. Please help.

Got my buddy a nice netgear networking kit to split the cable between 2 comps. 4 port fe104 10/100 hub and 2 10/100 netgear nic's. Hook up hub to modem using the uplink port[switched to uplink] and plugged the nic into the hub port, the only port that lights up is the one from my comp to the hub the uplink doesn't light up at all. I did this with my comp because his doesn't work with the cable modem. I think this is odd so i try messing with the plugs and they are secure, also tried a crossover cable from modem to hub and still nothing. Here's the kicker tried my linksys kit from my own home network and everything runs fine on my comp and my buddies new comp[k7 700] just not the old k62.

Anyhelp will be appreciated and no getting a new comp is not acceptible for the k62.

If you can, try getting older drivers for the 3COM card. I had a motherboard that for some reason wouldn't let my 3COM card used for my cable modem to work properly. Everything would be installed correctly, just like your setup, but it wouldn't work. It only happened in Windows 98 too. I used the driver disks that came with the card which were luckily a version over a year older than the newest ones and it worked perfectly. This has only happened to me on VIA based boards.

Also, are you sure the cable company will let you split the cable modem like that? That would probably require multiple IP addresses and many regions don't offer that to cable modems yet. The ones that do usually require you to call their tech support and request the extra IP addresses to be made available to you.

I tried installing it with new drivers and shipping drivers from 1996 and using a pci 10/100 netgear card as well. Also this was tried using win95 and win98. I have multiple ip's for splitting the network just that the netgear uplink won't connect to the cable modem. I have a similar setup just using a linksys home networking kit and it works fine in my house and his.
Any more help out there?

i recall some older motherboards having trouble with nic's, perhaps you should check out the motherboard web site for any patches or bios updates, also make shure you poke around in the bios just incase there is a setting for that in there somewhere
