I just got a cable modem installed, but because of the layout of my house the modem has to sit upstairs and there's not room for a machine up there. I was told by the cable guy that if I installed a router, I could just leave the modem and router upstairs (not connected to a computer) and connect my desktop and 2 laptops (all downstairs) to the network via wireless.
So I'm at home now with the new D-Link router (WBR-2310) and new cable modem (RCA DCM425) and I just can't get anything to work.
When I initially plugged in the router, my desktop picked up a wireless signal from it, but even though it was connected I couldn't access the internet (no firewalls or active virus protection on the PC...last time this happened, the problem was Norton Internet Security but it's not installed on this machine).
Can anyone verify that I can, in fact, use this router remotely with just the cable modem plugged into it and no machines connected directly to it?
And also, any idea why I can't log in to 192.168.0.1 and check settings? Please let me know if you can help. Thanks!
