Your supervisor should not discourage employees form asking questions, especially during a new hire period.

That said, yea, that was a stupid question.

Right. We're all so politically correct and sue happy these days it's best not to offend anyone!

That wasn't my point. Employees should be encouraged to ask questions. They should feel as though "there is no such thing as a stupid question". I didnt mean that in the sense that he/she would offend someone.
If you read what the supervisor said: She didnt discourage asking questions, she only discouraged asking questions on something she couldnt figure out on her own. New Mexico's status as a country is not a proprietary peice of information that only internal employees would know. Therefore she IS wasting the time of others by not answering it herself in a few quick seconds using google.

Girl: It was storming so bad last night I got under my bed.
Me: Why?
Girl: So I wouldn't get hit by lightning

I support and practice the idea of teaching someone how to fish instead of giving them a fish, but there are much more productive ways for that supervisor to approach such a thing. I would be discouraged to ask questions in the future if my supervisor said such things to me right off the bat when I approach them regardless of whether or not my question is considered a simple one or not. There are better ways to teach people how to fish. In all fairness though, I imagine the supervisor had already knew that this girl is a ditz so I sympathize in this case.

The supervisor asked because it wasnt the first time she asked such a question. By new I didnt mean she started today, shes actually been here over a month. Note the mountain time as a previous example

Someone who doesn't know if New Mexico is a country probably doesn't know how to use a search engine.

This would be a case of the stupid. Why would someone shelter New Mexico's status as a country from their child? (yes, I know it is a state)

There are people that learn and people the don't. Ill bet that next week he could ask her if New Mexico is a country and she would know the answer. You can blame the Education system all you want, but some kids are dumb.

Ya I think it's safe to assume that someone who grew up in the USA was at least exposed to the information that there is a state in the USA called New Mexico at some point in thier life, probably more than once. What bothers me is that some people have such a lack of care about basic knowledge that they wouldnt retain such info until they actually needed it. Having gotten to your ealry 20's (I think shes 22) and never have had the need to know wether New Mexico was a state is troublesome.

At least you don't have to deal with some pain in the ass at work who whistles as loud as she can randomly throughout the day and has ambitions to join STOMP on their next tour by trying to turn everything on her desk into a musical instrument by slamming it on her desk in sporadic patterns and calling it rhythm.

Then she plays the "my religious views are offended" card when you make so much as a suggestion that she stops being a pain in the ass. As if you needed confirmation, she's far from the "meet you in the middle" type, and I don't know whether I should bring the issue up to HR or just fucking shoot myself every time she starts to whistle. It's not easy to work in an environment that requires your concentration when someone insists on being obnoxious and doesn't know it.

edit: Wow... re-reading that... mmaaaaaaybe I'm a little too close to the deep end.

Well, I don't know, there isn't much of a reason to know if New Mexico is a state or not, it isn't like it affects most careers. What is disturbing is that when someone says "New Mexico" She doesn't instantly think "Its a state". Much like when someone says England most people will think "Its a country" Or something to that effect.

If you asked me right now to name all 50 states I would probably fail (starts naming off 50 states). But if you where to name off random countries and states I would most definitely be able to identify which ones are US states. Its just how I am.

I think the biggest problem is that someone like this that knows nothing of the difference between states and countries will probably be voting this next election. That is where I have my fears.
