ok..i know its 2003. but i still dont have a pc dvd player. i know retail comes with codecs...hw or sw versions. (is this right?)

if i get an oem version, where do i get codecs to play dvd's?

I don't have any DVD player either, but I'd imagine that many of the needed codecs will already be inside your machine.

You certainly don't need a 'retail' DVDROM. I have an OEM, and I've played every DVD I've ever owned on it. All you need is a good software DVD player, like WinDVD. The alternative (which has nothing to do with a retail drive) is to buy a DVD decoder card like one from Sigma Designs. I initially had one, however the passthrough cable quality was unbearable and software playback was actually superior on my machine, so I returned it.

Do you have a DVD drive yet? Many of them do come with WinDVD or PowerDvD software, and for those that don't you can buy an OEM version of the software (at the same time as you buy the drive) for $3-5. Check the drives at newegg.com, one good brand is Liteon.

If you are planning to upgrade your video card, some video cards also come with PowerDVD or WinDVD.

i was planngin on buying the slot load pioneer. i cant seem to fnd a retain version so i will get the oen from newegg.

i will search to see if they have a palyer for $5. that would be sweet.

I'm pretty sure they do (search on WinDVD and on PowerDVD) but if not then mwave.com definitely does. Also for the OEM pioneer at newegg look at the images and description since some OEM drives do ship with player software.

Well my brother's liteon I got in november was OEM and came with it...and so did mine

So I hope that quells any fear
