You certainly don't need a 'retail' DVDROM. I have an OEM, and I've played every DVD I've ever owned on it. All you need is a good software DVD player, like WinDVD. The alternative (which has nothing to do with a retail drive) is to buy a DVD decoder card like one from Sigma Designs. I initially had one, however the passthrough cable quality was unbearable and software playback was actually superior on my machine, so I returned it.
