Now, I am no network junkie so I really have no idea what I'm doing here.

I now have a 2mbps broadband connection happening next Thursday after waiting just over 5 years.

Anyway, I bought a Router recently namely the Linksys WRT54GS as I was under the impression that this would be used instead of a Modem. Kind of confused. 😕

Hope someone can explain what I'm doing wrong. I have connected a standard ethernet cable from the ethernet adaptor in my PC to port number one on the router. The problem is that on the back of the router I was expecting the second ethernet cable to connect from the "internet" port (same RJ45) as ports 1 to 4 to the ADSL filter that arrived with the modem received from my ISP. But, you know whats coming. The port in the back of the filter is not an RJ45. It's not the standard phone connector but something similar to the RJ45!!

Do I just get an adaptor to convert the connector to the right type. Looking at the ADSL USB modem I received from the ISP there is no RJ45 connector on it so that tells me I don't need the modem right. This is doing my head in. Do I need this modem or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

😉

1) you need the modem

2) you need a modem with an RJ45 connector instead of the one you have now. Call the DSL people and swap.

3) proper setup looks like this:

((Internet))----[modem]----[router]-----[your computer]-----[you]-----[pizza] 🙂

You can have more than one computer using the router at the same time too. The connection between the router and the computer(s) could be wired, wireless or a combination of both. If you have nearby neighbors, disable your wireless or use WPA encryption, and change the router's default password to Shagga@AT or something else reasonably strong.

D@mn. I believed that the router I bought didn't need a modem. Looking at the box it says it does. Doh. There are routers that do not need the modem isn't there?

They ought to swap you modems for free, though. Tell them you want one that uses an Ethernet connection instead of USB and they should hook you up.

Just spoke to them. They do a router with the right connector on the back. They didn't supply my current router 🙁 so bought the wrong darn thing.

No no no 😛 Swap for your DSL provider's piece-of-junk router/modem perversion, then plug your Linksys into their whatever-it-is. So you'll be like this:

((Internet))---[their junky router/modem]---[Linksys router]---[computer]---[you]---[]

(edit: you may need some help with this dual-router arrangement when it comes setup time)

Another option is to tell your DSL provider to get lost 🙂 and get cable Internet instead, so you can get your own Motorola modem and use your router without the hassle of two layers of network-address translation.

Ahh, I see. But that means I will be going through 2 routers. What wireless G Router is there available with a built in modem and the facility to have wired connections also.

Thanks for your help. 😉

I'll try to scrounge one up, but if your phone company is like mine, they ONLY support the use of their piece-of-trash... AOL-'tard-user... rrrrrr.... CELERON-CLASS junk modem-router. :|

Firewall settings on their ActionTec things: "Basic, Low, Medium, High." Uhhhh.... NO. I want something likeTHIS. Uh oh, I'm ranting... *goes to search for what you want*

It seems to be a black sheep, I can't find good info on their site about it 😕

Yeah, just reading reviews on it. Aparently the pre v2 routers stink. Not sure how good the v2's are. 🙂
