Really mad at Sony now!! (and need advise)

Ok, I need to vent and get some advise. Yesterday my monitor, a Sony CPD-G420s, started making a high pitched whining noise. Anyway, tonight I noticed it again and decided to mess around with it. I've been running it at 1600x1200 at 75Hz. I've determined that it won't function at all at 1600x1200 without whining, even at 60Hz (the lowest refresh rate). It works fine at 1280x1024 at 85Hz, which is where it is now.
So I figure something must be broken and call up Sony. After a 15 min hold (pretty good, really) I get a tech who seems ok. He tells me to knock my refresh rate down, that 60Hz is that max that monitor can do at 1600x1200. I tell him if it is they wrote their drivers wrong. Anyway, I finally get him straightened out after he reads the monitor's specs and he tells me that they can ship me a monitor if I fax them the recipet and I can ship mine in when I get the new one. All fine and good, and I'm pretty happy.
Then I tell him (being the honest guy I try to be) that there's a small, hardly noticable scratch on it. He says they'll probably charge me something for it. I'm fine with that, and he goes on hold for a while to find out how much they'll charge me.

I paid $480 for this thing in 07/2001 and they want to charge me over half the price for a small scratch. So I told him I'd think about it and call back if I wanted to send it in still. I think I'd be better off selling this in FS/FT to someone who can fix it and live with the scratch (like I have) and buying myself a LCD or 21" CRT or something.

What do you guys think? Should I sell it and get a new one? Is $270 a fair price for a small scratch? Do I have any other options?

EDIT: I just looked on Newegg and a new monitor (same as mine now) is $394 w/ free shipping. I'm probably better off eating the $120 and giving this monitor to someone like my dad who likes lower resolutions for the bigger text size anyway.

Is this a small scratch on the screen or the case? For the case I think it's unreasonable. For the screen, seems the only way to replace it is to replace the whole tube which would be akin to just having a new monitor....

do they have your serial # on record that you need a replacement? if they don't, just call in again and renegotiate.

yea do that if you get a different person you may be in luck

and if not. sell it on FS/FT. you can eaisily get 120 for it. whick will cover the cost of a new one

Do a search and you'll see that they wanted $225 to look at my 32" Wega which died after 18 months. Would have cost $200 to get it there on top of that. No more Sony for me (not my first problem with them, but it will be my last).
