LCDs will always look best in native resolution, remember some LCDs like my Samsung 191T can do other resolutions in centered mode where you can have the lower resolution(like 800x600) centered with a black border around it,the good thing about centered mode for lower res is the image is very crisp just like native res,the bad thing about it is the screen size will be smaller since it`s not filling the whole screen unless I select expanded mode but then the image will look poor.

To recap 1280x1024 is my native res on my 191T & looks great for obvious reasons.
Any centered mode for lower res like 800x600 etc will look great but with smaller image size that does not fill the whole screen(not all LCDs have the option to do centered mode).

Expanded mode for lower res on mine varies from poor to good(depending on the res) but is used if you want full screen size , you will lose image quality compared to native and centered mode.

Best way to test ghosting IMHO is to play fast FPS games like Q3,UT at native res of LCD and preferably in DVI mode ,your eyes are the best judge and can tell you what is acceptable or not.
Until OLED monitors arrive (suppose to be 2006 or so) you only have two choices CRT or LCD,bottom line is both have their Pro`s and Con`s.
I forgot to meantion 60Hz setting, most LCD models recommend this setting(read your manual if you`re not sure) and I`ve mine set at 60Hz,remember LCDs don`t refresh like CRTs.
