really have to hand it to Microsoft lately

the latest releases of their enterprise products are very well done.
new features (and improvements to old) that are well thought out and implemented, and easy to deploy.

i'm talking about server 2008, sql 2008, exchange 2010, sharepoint 2010...
and of course Windows 7

 to Microsoft

They need to have it where you can have a single NTFS volume larger than 256TB. This is a really annoying shortcoming.

why would one need a volume that is bigger than that. The only applicable reason would be for a single file. Otherwise you can chain them. More efficient and has worked well in the past. Access speed is more critical than storage capacity.

He needs that much space so he can do this:

What kind of work do you do that requires single files larger than 256TB? Even Pixar's movie rendering systems don't use anything remotely close to that much space.

I have heard good things as well about the 2008 line of products. Nice to see they are finally starting to improve. There's lot of stuff I've always told myself they should have done, some of it is actually being done now.

Everything at work is NT4/2000/2003 though so I wont really get to use any of the new features. I find 2003 and below is just "meh". It gets the job done, is fairly reliable, but there's no real reason to use it over say, Linux, which will do all of that and nto cost as much. As far as support, you have to pay MS every time you call anyway, so paying for a product so you get support is a moot point there. I'm sure there are companies you can call to get Linux support at a cost, too. Normally as an IT person it's your job to support the environment anyway.

One thing I cannot stand about MS though, well, most companies, is the way licensing works. They'll add tons of artificial limits just to force you to pay more. I already paid 2k for the product, now I have to pay for cals too? wtf rape!

I hear win7 is really good too and has made leaps and bounds from XP (let's not even mention Vista, that's just a practical joke by MS), I want to switch to 7 next PC upgrade. I might even pay for it given the price is reasonable for an operating system I'll probably end up using for 5+ years.
