What are some really good headphones for an ipod? It doesn't have to be super audiophile stuff since I am not listening to any lossless stuff. Just want something that takes advantage of the technology. Thanks!

It'd help to have a price range and idea of the type of headphones you're looking for. There are open (Grado SR-80) and closed (Senn HD-280) full-sized headphones, then there are portable sized headphones (PX100/200, Koss KSC-75/PortaPros), then canalphones (Shure E2C, Etymonic ER-6i, Senn CX200). The phones in parens are just some of the ones my friends and I have used that are good and under $100 (many are under $50 even).

Bose has the highest customer confidence of any major company. This is probably heavily based on the fact that they have copyrighted their product names and never change them (the products...well they rarely change either, most of the stuff is outdated technology too).

Bose is a perpetual motion machine that sucks in profit from marketting. I see it this way PerdueRy. If someone suggests Bose, I don't really care. If the guy ends up buying Bose, and can't stand it, he'll get something better. If he doesn't, then he probably valued brand recognition more than audio anyway.

I don't care if someone suggests it, but that doesn't mean I am not going to disagree. I have never seen such cheap headphones for such a rediculous price. It has the same headphone cord as a bundled pair of headphones! You would think with paying $150 they could make the cord a bit more durable!

I see no reason to get the Bose triports with the Sennheiser HD555's out there.

As for the highest consumer confidence...that means about as much to me as consumer reports. If you are told something is the best, and it is expensive, and it is rare to have a friend with anything higher end...most likely you will believe you got the best value for the best equipment out there.

I don't care if someone suggests it, but that doesn't mean I am not going to digress.
You'd think somebody like PurdueRy would convince them to stay away from Bose, rather than to stray off topic. :D

LOL, its good because he plans to use it on an iPod, Apple's marketing whore, just keep repackaging it in shinier, smaller vessel and sell more.

It would only be fitting for it to have Bose earbuds attached.

I have a pair of Sony MDR-Ex71's that i use with my Ipod nano and i must say they work pretty well. I think the bass is sometimes over emphaszied on them but the treble is clear and sharp. Plus, you can't beat the price as they can be had for under 40 now. Just be aware that these are in-ear earphones that go deep into you ears. At first i was wary and uncomfortable with them but i quickly got used to them. Filters out a decent amount of noise and you don't need to crank up the volume as loud.

All the pod people in our house use and love the Sennheiser MX400 which is like $10 from Amazon.com.

Bose is one of the worlds most successfull marketing companies that hasn't had a product with outstanding performance or remotely good value in 3 decades.

Anybody know if all the kids that bought the Headbanger earsubs are deaf yet?

I borrowed my friends sony 750DJs and those sound excellent! Way better for rock, metal, rap or that kind of stuff, midrange isn't very pronounced in jazz.

If you don't mind big, Grado SR60's are only like $70 and are excellent. If you're looking for something portable, I love my Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pros, but they are a little over $200. They are IEMs, I've owned etymotics and listened to shures and like the UEs much better. They also block a ton more sound than noise cancelling headphones and don't need power to do it. Don't get earbuds as a general rule, if you want something small, get a set of IEMs.

As for Bose, their marketing is so good that it is nearly impossible to convince the average person that Bose is garbage. They just won't accept in most cases, and I've stopped caring, it's their money to waste.

IEM?

I'm in the market for some portable earbuds or headphones for my ipod shuffle too. I've got a set of grado SR60s and while they are fantastic having a set of cans with a wire that takes up more room than my mp3 player is rather silly.

Yup. I'm happy w/mine as long as my iPod's on the Treble Reduce eq setting...

Couldn't get mine from Amazon though, because they decided they wouldn't sell it to me :(

OP, what do you mean by this:
Just want something that takes advantage of the technology.

Another vote for PX100 (assuming that you want open headphones). It definitely has the best sound for ~$50

IEM stands for Inner (or Internal, something like that) Ear Monitor. They fit in your ears like ear plugs and create a seal against outside sound, which in addition to blocking sound allows for much better bass performance than earbuds. They actually slide slightly into your ear canal instead of being held in by the flaps of cartilage (spelling?) like earbuds. They look very similar to buds, but if you actually use them you will see there is a pretty big difference. It's not for everyone, some people think it feels weird or actually don't want to deafen the world around them. I live in NYC, and wearing them requires a lot vigilant looking around as to avoid getting hit by taxis and other hazards.

Sorry for the late response. When I said something that takes advantage of the technology I meant if there was something that works better with ipods. I hated to relent to the Apple machine but unless I can find a player with more goodies for it, thats how its going to be.

I work in a crowded office so anything that stops my tune noise from leaping out into my coworkers ears is a plus. Thanks again.

I'm still not sure what you mean...all the headphones listed will work with nearly all MP3 players.

Apple doesn't use a proprietary jack in their iPod...

For an office setting;

Earbuds, little guys just like what comes with ipod only good, Sennheiser MX400, comes with a nice windup case very tidy, but doesn't block sounds, and people will hear it if you play them too loud. This is both good and bad, you can still hear people in the office so they don't start hitting you on the head to start a conversation, and maybe you won't be deaf in a few years from playing them too loud.

IEM, same basic size for many of them as the earbuds, but you stick them into the ear canal. Eeeew, but apparently many get used to it, you can't know until you try them for a week or so. Most of them do a great job of blocking out sound both ways, you won't hear the bus the runs you over, but granny sitting next to you won't know its gangsta rap you are listening too either. Many of this type are VERY high quality and priced accordingly.

Headphones that ship with the ipod are junk, but that is because different people like different kinds of headphones, with no real convergence on any one brand or type at any price point. You really need to listen to several types etc. to find what suits you personally best.

Start with a set of the MX400, $10 via amazon or J&R Music or ebay, to get a nice reference point or even just to have later on so when your creepy freind wants to listen to your Ipod you don't need to let him use your $200 in ear wonders.
