I always give a nice firm handshake, but not crushing potential. I also vary the firmness based on how the other person shakes. So at the beginning if I do mine really firm, but his is limp, I will let up a bit. I also prefer to receive a firm handshake over limp or crushing.

I used to shake Mens hands very firmly,and the younger,larger the guy,the harded i scrunched;
One day this Dude i knew,i shook his hand,Very hard,he almost cried.This young guy was like 6'4",
and about 250 lbs, i was 6' and about 210.
The next time i saw him,like 3 days later;he said "Hey do you hate me or something,?"

He said you squeazed my hand so hard you broke 2 finger bones!
Bummer... since then i have just done a firm handshake,not the Pop the knuckles type.
