More likely people don't understand how radio signals work, so they just get confused and the default "well this tech guy says it works so it must" parts of the brain takes hold. The mirror part of it is what makes it sound realistic, since you can bounce a laser off a mirror (and TV remote IR signals as well), so the "remote control" part obviously must be able to be bounced.

Of course, then you just have to wonder, why not just hold the keyfob up to the phone, why bounce it in the first place?

Yeah, I don't see what's accomplished by bouncing the signal anywhere instead of just aiming it straight at the car.

Well mainly because the car is nowhere near where the remote is. :)
