Really cool idea for speakers

I saw this in some of the speakers I have at home, they astounded me when I first saw them...

Instead of using a Bass Tube Hole thingy, put a huge speaker cone (no magnet, wires, or anything) on the side of the speaker cabinet, and the air pushed from the mid range will create bass through the speaker!

In the one I have, it uses a 2" tweeter on top, a 5" mid range, and a 15" "woofer", the woofer being nothing more than a speaker cone. It acts as if it was actually powered too! And the more powerful of a midrage you have, the better the woofer acts :) Great invention, no name on the speaker box though.

Yeah, whatever it is, why don't people use these? I was thinking of adding a big fake woofer to all the speakers in my house :)

Yup a passive radiator indeed.
Unfortunately, the PR works as a port, and if you tune it too low (PR is too heavy for its given diameter) you get less bass (for music).......PR's are much more sensitive to proper tuning, which is why they're scarce (especially in the crapmercial speaker market)
However quite a few awesome home theatre subs have been made using PR's......

Basically unless you've designed speakers, or at least subs, and a few, and you know all the factors involved in making a sub (such as how volume affects step response and SPL) I'd STRONGLY recommend you leave your stuff alone.

<< The results below compare the Power15 to the (Velodyne) F1800 in the 2136ft3 room.

Average SPL 25Hz to 62Hz
Velodyne F1800 - 112dB
Stryke Power15 - 117.8dB

SPL at 16Hz 10% distortion
Velodyne F1800 - 102dB
Stryke Power15 - 110.5dB

SPL at 20Hz 10% distortion
Velodyne F1800 - 106dB
Stryke Power15 - 110.1dB

Um, yeah, it's a passive radiator. My speakers (Radio shack baby! Actually they sound pretty good) have them, same size as the woofer so it looks like each box has two ;) and also my dad has a pair of ESS speakers with a PR in the rears...

So the 3 15" PR's almost double the volume? (10db is double [something like that]) And it probably costs about 10 cents to put one in?

The "PR's" in my speakers look exactly like real speakers though, unlike the Stryke 15 things...

no no no

all PR's do is TAKE THE PLACE OF THE PORT.
They function almost the same as a port (except a bit laggier giving you looser bass, but no port noise at all since there is no port)

Also, you need a driver that can actually move the PR to begin with........the Power 15 project has a woofer with over 1inch of linear stroke.......your mid would be lucky to have 1/8th of a inch :Q

Well, it does make it louder, as indicated by the decibles.

The mid-range I put in had a lot of "stroke", it would be around 1 1/2 inches, got it from a mid 1950's radio :/

Nope, but I guarntee you you'd lose SPL.

LOL 1-1/2inches!
Even a $100 Dynaudio 5inch woofer only has about 12mm of stroke.

*stroke is how far the magnet can push the cone, linearly*

The BEST sub would have to be the ServoDrive ContraBass (I believe that's the name anyway) I can't find the webpage for it right now though, but it was like, 16hz at 160db's...or something like that.

Not even the loudest car audio vehicle on the PLANET can hit 160db's @ 16hz.......

It wasn't a car audio speaker :p It's a home theatre speaker. It's somewhere in the $5000 range too..

The 5" mid range I have has a tiny magnet, weighs about 1 ounce :/ It probably moves a lot just because the cone is utter crap, too.

My Klipsch KG3s use one. Klipsch used them on a few different models.

Well if a car competition vehicle that costs over $100,000 can't hit 160dbs @ 16hz, thers no farking way you're going to hit that in your HT with $5k

Note that the very same Power15 cabient that got 120db in room would hit 145db's at least in a car......................

There is this one dude from Car Tunes where I live who has a van with 48 12" Digital Design 5000's (or was it 3500's?) and he hit 165 db or so

Probably at 50hz+ list most other SPl vehicles........

You said

and im telling you that if vehicles built for competition can't hit that much SPL @ 16hz, you have NO CHANCE of doing it in your living room.

I wish I could find a link to an article I read in Sound & Vision about a guy who used a room in the basement of his house as the enclosure for a subwoofer, and the vent in the floor between that room and the living room as the port. The walls were reinforced to handle the extra strain, and soundproofing material was used as well.

It had a bunch of drivers and some ridiculously powerful amps. He actually BLEW OUT THE WINDOWS in his living room when he turned it up too loud the one night.

Impressive to say the least. I just wish I had the specs!
