Not quite sure where to post this, so I thought I would try the collective hive mind of OT.

I'm looking to get a computer or two on a frayed shoe string budget for some tech labs I want to set up at home. I've been paroosing FS/FT and dell, and craigs list, and HP to see if I could get somthing that would fit the bill but have been less than successful up until this point.

I need somthing that can run Windows server 2008 for less than 100 bucks if possible (75 would be great.

Maybe I'm dreaming...

Barring luck, I think you're dreaming. How about setting them up as VMs on your main box?

look/wait for some dell deals with coupons and stuff.

edit: wait, you want something that runs 2008 server well for under $100?

I built a $200 computer with a dual core 2.6GHz AMD CPU and 2GB RAM. The integrated graphics card is good enough for bluray and other HD content.

$200 is possible for a modern machine to screw around with.

I've thought about a VM but having an actual box I think would fit my needs better...

Don't dismiss the idea. There's some advantages to running a VM. For the cost of a few small items(extra NIC, more ram, faster CPU), it would almost be a dedicated box.

FYI, based on my experiences with Server 2003 you'll want 1 GB RAM minimum and 2 GB for reliable performance (I had applications misbehaving with 1 GB).

You can probably find a decent single-core motherboard, CPU, 2 GB RAM package in FS/FT for under $100 but you still need a case, PSU and HD drive.

Do you have any parts?
Do you have stuff to sell/trade like PC or console games?

Motherboard - $70 (you could go cheaper, I wanted the integrated graphics on this one for BluRay and HDMI)
2GB RAM - $23
2.5Ghz AMD Athlon x2 - $56
Case w/ PSU $42

So, that's $191. I had the optical drive and harddrive laying around.

I bought this almost 6 months ago, so I bet with a little bit of research you can get the parts I listed for $150, then get a $25 harddrive and a $20 dvd drive.

It can haz timewarp. Trying to follow threads can be tricky these days.

See my post (after yours, but warped above it) -- that $91 PC would be fine but needs a RAM upgrade, 512 MB is not enough.

Splurge the $15 and upgrade to 2GB of ram. And I'm surprised you can't find a $50 motherboard.

I did see it,

definately strongly considering it. I need to do a bit of reseach about wether or not I can run server 2008 on it. Generally if it can run vista it can run 2008 but there are always the 'gotchas'

If it helps, I've run Server 2008 on an old PC with lesser specs than that without any problems.

What do you care? You don't need 7 PCI slots.

Try gobbling up some computers that were leased by corporations, then returned? I think Dell has alot of those.
