Ok, after weeks of reading through forums and junk like that, I concluded that a GeForce FX 5700 Non-Ultra, an Athlon XP 2500+, an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe, and a Zalman CNPS-7000A-AlCu would be enough to keep me patient till Socket 939, and PCI-E. When I got it, I applied AS5 like i usually do, as the AS instructions say, and make sure that its a nice thin layer on the die. I bumped the FSB up to 200, and the VCore to 1.75, only to realize that 1. this thing runs real hot (like 50C idle) and 2. its really unstable, Prime 95 only lasts like 24 minutes. i set it back down to 166 FSB and 1.65 VCore, this thing still runs like 48C idle, i have the Zalman cooler on MAX (i disconnected the fan mate entirely) and i have the ASUS fan throttling feat. disable

did you check to see if its seated right?

maybe just remove the HS and re-seat it?

the instability is from the motherboard. i keep repeating this over and over again because so many people buy this trashy model of the A7N8X. it can't hanlde 200FSB, lower it to 190 or 195 in order to get your stability back. 50C idle is NOT hot,but its too warm if you want to seriously overclock(2.45ghz+). what do you have for case fans?

i have two intakes in the front, an exhaust in the window, an exhaust in the back, and the intake (inside) to exhaust (outside) in my Enermax Noisetaker 470W (shouldn't be a cause of the problem). is it running hot due to the motherboard? or is it my cooler? i was thinking either this, an Abit AN7/NF7-S, and now i'm considering that one shuttle board, AN35Ultra i believe, but it has no SATA :(
so getting a Mobile Athlon XP 2400+ 35 Watt wouldn't give me better results? my first motherboard died due to a dead bios, and newegg rma'd me this new one, and they both OC like (^&^&%

EDIT: actually i wouldn't consider either of those boards, i'd get one of these
DFI "NFII ULTRA INFINITY" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL (Single Ethernet)
GIGABYTE "GA-7N400 Pro2" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL (Has no SoundStorm :() (Single Ethernet)
MSI "K7N2 Delta-ILSR" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL (Single Ethernet)

These two are the ONLY boards with identical or better features than that of my motherboard, and they cost 50 more, although I'm not buying any of these, I'll just live at 2500+ till i move up to FX-55 :)
DFI "LANPARTY NFII ULTRA B" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL
GIGABYTE "GA-7NNXP" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL

wow that post was a big jumble. whate are you talking about!? :)

i RMAed that motherboard back to newegg and got a DFI Lanparty(the Infinity is pretty much the same thing minus the fluff). i put the SAME hardware into the DFI and it ran 250fsb no problem.

i'd really suggest trying your hardware in another pc if you can to make sure your motherboard is the problem though. do as i said before, set your FSB to 190 and test for stability. if your stability comes back then you probably have the exact same problem i had.

your case cooling is fine, motherboards won't effect temp, but might effect temp readings. just a thought.

If you change motherboards I'd be interested in knowing if it helps. I personally run the A7N8X-Deluxe and I see plenty others on this forum overclocking succesfully with it at 200MHz FSB and more.

I'll also have to say that I think the chances of hitting 3200+ speeds with a 2500+ isn't as great as people make it out to be. Many of those users don't run stability tests like you do to test the overclock. While some may argue that they won't push their system that hard and it runs fine, it seems like you do care.

My guess is it's your chip. I went through a couple XP2500+ chips and half weren't able to hit 3200+ and be Prime95 stable. At least I got one that does 2.4GHz Prime95 stable :)

i too think its the chip, since i have been through two boards with equal results, if i can run my memory (HyperX PC3700, good stuff, too bad i didn't get a chance to use it :() at 233 MHz then i assume my motherboard can run that speed
what really made me start Prime'ing after OC'ing or doing it to new systems I build is once when i was using it at 200 FSB 1.85 VCore, i got a BSOD in XP (first time ever) telling me that there was a paging fault in a non-paged area, if a PC can't last in Prime95 till you stop it, then it ain't stable, at stock speeds i let this thing go through the "Blend" torture test for 9 hours and then i shut it off. i'm probably not going to upgrade the mobo unless i can sell this one for a good price, i mean, my dad already is planning on letting me get a new system in september (my current pc i bought in february with 500 dollars that i earned selling pcs and saving lunch money and some extra/used parts). is it really worth 10 FPS in UT2k4 if your gonna be able to do double what you used to?

EDIT: of course, one of these would be nice :D

A7N8X-Deluxe and A7N8X-E Deluxe are two different models. i had the E and whenever i set it to 200mhz FSB it simply would crash before the OS even started to load, and it would restart the computer with lower settings. i could only managed 195FSB on that motherboard for it to work. i seriously lack any trust in Asus hardware and don't see myself trying another of their motherboards anytime soon.
