Reallocated Sectors Count (Intel G2 120Gb)

I downloaded and ran Acronis Drive Monitor, and noticed the following issues with my boot drive:

Should I be concerned? Is there a fix for the reallocated sectors (secure erase, and restore from backup), or should I just replace it? I've actually been thinking about upgrading to SATA3 anyway, so I'm not all that broken-hearted about the G2 acting up... though this drive is only about a year and a half old, with less than 2.5Tb written.

Acronis also reported something in the Event Logs that apparently started happening recently:

Is this the sign of another problem, and is there a fix?

For the volsnap, that just means that it is getting rid of the old copies, while new copies are being made.

For the reallocated sector count, normally, I would secure erase it, but with that error, dunno, not really sure how a SSD treats them,
I would have thought the firmware would deal with it, but not sure, since you are obviously getting them. I would ping intel and see what they say, since you should still have a warranty on that SSD I think.

I increased the size of the disk space used for system protection on C: a couple of percentage points to see if that clears it up.

Use Intels SSDToolbox instead. How much data did you write?

And relocated sectors as such is fine if you wrote to the same alot.

You can also see how much relocation space is left.

Mabye Acronis's application interpretation is geared more towards mechanical drives? Intel doesn't appear to be as concerned about the reallocated sectors.

I had just never noticed those before, and was wondering if it was an indication of drive wear, which seemed strange to me as I've not written a whole lot to this drive, relatively speaking. They could have been there for some time, and I just never noticed because SSD Toolbox has been saying "ready for use" all along and I glossed over it.

There's nothing to clear up, it's an informational message about the normal operation of VSS.

That was what I got from researching -- only that it's baffling that Acronis considers it a low-risk critical event, and throws a yellow splat in the tray, but doesn't explain why. Almost as though they think this is a bigger issue than the reallocated sectors.

Possibly so that you can verify you've got enough space allocated to hold the number of snapshots that you think you do if you're using them as intermediary backups. But I would still think less of the tool and probably stop using it if it's flagging non-issues like that.

Agreed.

Why are you not using the intel toolbox on your drive?

I am. I just noticed the SMART issue in passing while dabbling with a couple of other disk health monitoring applications, and was asking if the different interpretation was any reason for concern. I think you've all answered that question, which I appreciate.

Here's my toolbox shot.

It was my first SSD, and it's far exceeded expectations -- I was one of the Luddites that was absolutely determined to stay on mechanical drives back then. :) It's not the fastest on the block, but still outstanding and reliable. I occasionally have concerns about the 8Mb bug, but so far, so good.

Updating the firmware was a little scary -- I put it off for as long as possible, just afraid something would go wrong... then just crossed my fingers and went for it one day and, sure enough -- immediate BSOD. Crap. Shut down, restarted, and... it came back up intact and updated. Phew.

Other then one reported claim I saw somewhere on the net of someone getting the 8mb bug the G2 usually doesn't suffer from this bug it was more the 320 series so I wouldn't worry about it.

still have 2 in raid 0 [pre-ordered]and have been rock solid , plus they still do 820pts in AS-SSD , but sadly will be moving to a Samsung 840 [256gb] then they get released ,
-at 240gb a bit too small for backup's ,might use them for a back up image only.
