Reality TV Show Pulled By Activists

While I think reality tv shows tend to be stupid, but I probably would have watched this one. Understanding the difficulties minorities go through in everyday life, even in our backyards would really go a long way in helping our society as a whole. I think it's kind of scary these communities exist where there are no minorities and they are afraid to run the show because of potential conflict or misrepresentation.

ABC pulls edgy reality show after groups complain
Thu Jun 30, 2005 8:11 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - ABC has pulled an upcoming reality series in which people with various backgrounds vie to win a house in a white neighborhood, after gay and conservative watchdog groups raised concerns, the Hollywood trade papers said Thursday.

The six-episode "Welcome to the Neighborhood" had been scheduled to debut on July 10. Seven families, including a gay couple with an adopted son, people of Asian, black and Hispanic descent and pagans, had to convince conservative residents that they were worthy of moving into the house near Austin, Texas.

"Our intention with 'Welcome to the Neighborhood' was to show the transformative process that takes place when people are forced to confront preconceived notions of what makes a good neighbor, and we believe the series delivers exactly that," Walt Disney Co. -owned ABC said in a statement carried by Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

"However, the fact that true change only happens over time made the episodic nature of this series challenging, and given the sensitivity of the subject matter in early episodes, we have decided not to air the series at this time."

Daily Variety said ABC could eventually air a condensed version so that the feel-good ending comes sooner.

Groups ranging from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Fair Housing Alliance to the conservative Family Research Council had raised concerns about the show, the papers said.

GLAAD was concerned that the gay couple might get grilled by the neighbors, while the Family Research Council was worried that the conservative neighbors might be ridiculed for their Christian beliefs.

The National Fair Housing Alliance argued the show contravened various housing laws prohibiting discrimination, though Daily Variety said it passed muster with ABC's lawyers. A network official was unavailable for comment.

ABC's move comes about 18 months after CBS scrapped plans to air a miniseries about Ronald Reagan because conservatives complained that it misrepresented the former president.

The film eventually aired on cable's Showtime channel, to a considerably smaller audience than it would otherwise have gotten. CBS and Showtime are owned by Viacom Inc .

Looks like race bait.

Chances are nothing big happened but the show would have put everything under a microscope.

All that show would have done is reinforce minorities views that white suburbia is only for whites and of course whitey is the devil.

what are you talking about? whitey is the devil!

seriously though, yeah they would have been welcomed in, and they would have had a good time. this just doesn't make good confrontational tv.

The reasons for the pulling are very much political and worth discussion.

America doesn't need a reality show to reinforce those views. Reality does the job well enough without the show.

They couldn't air this show because they don't want to put the truth about America on TV for the world to see. After all, in America, whether it's Austin TX or NYC, some things never change...

Howard Beach 'bias' attack

Bat-wielding thug clubs black man

Glenn Moore, who was beaten with a baseball bat.
A black man was clubbed with a baseball bat in Howard Beach early yesterday by white attackers, fracturing his skull in what authorities called a hate crime, police said.

"This is what you get if you want to rob white boys, n----r!" one of the attackers spewed as Glenn Moore, 22, lay bleeding, the victim's friends told cops, law enforcement sources said.

Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly held a news conference at the 106th Precinct stationhouse in Queens last night after a suspected attacker was arrested.

The brutal beating came nearly 20 years after a black construction worker, Michael Griffith, was run down by a car in the same neighborhood when thugs chased him into traffic - a crime that turned Howard Beach into a byword for racial tensions in New York.

"We will have no tolerance whatsoever for hate crimes against any groups in this city," declared Bloomberg, who said it appeared the attack was "racially motivated."

"We have come a long ways in New York and we are not going to let one incident divide this city," he added.

Bloomberg called the attack "ugly" but "isolated," noting that no other hate crimes had been committed in Howard Beach in the past two years.

Moore, who was taken to Jamaica Hospital in serious condition with a fractured skull, was recovering last night, his mother told the Daily News.

"It doesn't make any sense that something like this continues to happen," the distraught mother, Chandra Eison, said.

"We bleed the same blood. To be attacked for just walking in the neighborhood? ... How can you do that to somebody?"

After initially refusing to cooperate with cops, his two friends admitted they had been in the area to steal a luxury car. But they insisted Moore wasn't in on the plan, police said.

Nicholas Minucci, 19, who was arrested in the brutal attack, also apparently had no idea what Moore's pals had been up to, the sources said.

In a videotaped confession, Minucci told cops he attacked Moore because he believed Moore and his pals had "eyed" a $3,000 chain Minucci had been wearing days earlier at a Cross Bay Blvd. hangout, sources said. But investigators doubted that account, sources said.

Minucci - who was on probation for stabbing a teen in 2002 - told cops he repeatedly hit Moore with a metal bat at 3:30 a.m., but claimed Moore fractured his skull when he tripped while fleeing, the sources said.

Minucci's accomplice ripped Moore's Air Jordan sneakers off his feet during the assault on 79th St. near 159th Ave., the sources said.

Sometime earlier, Moore's friends had allegedly attempted to steal a Chrysler 300 parked outside a house in nearby Lindenwood, police said.

One of the friends told cops they had been promised $6,000 if they swiped the car, but said the threesome took off after a light inside a house came on, the sources said.

As Moore and his friends walked into Howard Beach, a Cadillac Escalade drove up beside them, police said.

Moore and his pals "posted up" - meaning they pretended to be waiting for a bus - and then exchanged "hard stares" with the sport-utility vehicle driver, Kelly said.

The black SUV drove off but returned 15 minutes later, this time with three men inside, and one of them yelled, "Yo! What are you n-----s doing here?" the sources said.

Minucci, known in the neighborhood as Fat Nick, allegedly jumped out with a metal bat. Moore's friends ran off and hid in a marsh near St. Helen's Catholic Church, but he slipped, the sources said.

Minucci allegedly hit Moore with the bat, while another attacker tore an earring out of his ear and stole his sneakers and his bag, which held a pair of shoes and clothes for his 6-month-old daughter, the sources said.

Moore managed to use his cell phone to call his friends, who returned and alerted cops, the sources said. The friends - Richard Pope, 25, and Richard Walker, 20, both of Brooklyn - eventually agreed to help cops, the sources said.

Driving along the Lindenwood and Howard Beach border with NYPD Capt. Michael Osgood, Pope spotted the Escalade. Cops pulled the SUV over, finding a bat, Moore's sneakers and the bag with his baby's clothes, sources said.

Minucci was driving the car, police said. He was charged with first-degree assault as a hate crime, and faces up to 25 years in prison, if convicted.

Police identified one alleged accomplice as Anthony Ench of Howard Beach. Cops were also looking for a third white man, identified only as Frankie.

Although Moore has a past arrest for car theft, his mother insisted he carried a hammer and other tools with him because he planned to hang his Air Jordans on his wall as a decoration.

She said her son, who is unemployed, had served a year in the Army and was on disability.

The beating stunned many in the close-knit Queens neighborhood, which the late mob boss John Gotti called home.

"It wasn't a racial incident," insisted Minucci's cousin Nicholas Bonina, 23. "We have black neighbors. It's not like that anymore."

what's funny to me is that the show was pulled primarily b/c of pressure by the league of xtraordinary homosexuals (that's what i call them, they go by GLAAD), not b/c of pressure by Christian groups. personally, i would have liked to have seen the show as well, but i'd also like to see if any of the residents portrayed in the show are, in fact, actually "christian." doubtful...

If someone scopes your car you call the police, that is the job they asked to do, and are willing to do. You do not I repeat do not commence to taking your animalisitic urges out on them.

As for the show, it doesn't really deserve air time, as they would have just made mountains out of molehills, and inflamed what could be lifelong friendships.

Problems would have been massive! Consider how people are egged on (baited) by these shows and even encouraged to cause rifts.

I could see the show painting something on the garage door then airing it as if some of the neighbors had taken the action.

We have all seen how people will do outlandish things when the camera is on them. It is always sad to see someone yelling something, looking at the camera, smiling then starting to yell even louder.

After the editors got hold of the tape all you would see was how mean spirited the neighbors were and how dejected the new neighbors were because they were not "accepted."

How about a reality TV show where the city government goes in and tears down any home worth less than $50,000 and gives the land over to Ross Perot or the Bass Brothers to develope so the city can have more money. Hey, the displaced individuals might even get "fair market value" for their homes. After all the U.S. Supreme Court says this is fair and balanced. :/

I think it was good they decided to axe the show. It would have been the TV equivalent of trolling. Seems like the whole premise was to stir up controversey for the sake of controversey. Things will never change as long as we perpetuate the hate.

I would consider it the other way around. After all a Black man can assault a cafe and pour lighter fluid on the bound White men and women stating that <racial slurs> will be buring tonight. The city leaders then call it an "unfortunate incident" and not a hate crime....

bwahaha

If you delve into America's history of racism you will realize that the perpetrators and victims are rather one-sided.

My point is they probably took a lot of things out of context to play up the race issue. Like I said this show sounds like race bait.

I grew up in suburbia and when minorities moved in not a single neighbor gave two shats either way. Our feelings were if they can afford it they deserve it.

Was there a difference in how the minorities were treated?
Like if a gay family and a kid (or an arabic family) moved in would they get welcoming baskets and asked over for parties like other white families presumably would?

Shows like this exist only to show negativity. If nothing bad actually happened. . .which it probably didn't. . .the show would be a flop anyway. Like I said. . .controversey for the sake of controversey. For ratings and dollars. This, much like many day time "talk show / dramas" (i.e. Jerry Springer) exist solely to appeal to the lowest common denominator and the basest instincts in all of us and perpetuate negativity and controversey. Totally socially irresponsible.

Yeah, and where was it?

I do agree that the show would have scouted the most "action packed" location, but I question their motivation to actually instigate conflict.

For example, for shows like survivor, they pick confrontational people as they make for a better show, they don't start $hit but they do set the landscape for it.

They'd take the most flamboyant gays and put them in the whitest racist areas in the country. No wonder good ol Texas got picked 😉

How about a reality show that shows people working thier ass off to get somewhere? The main reason I hate reaity shows is it's all about getting something for nothing. think about it, every show pits some losers getting something. Weather they vie for some millionaire hubby or get thier house redone.

thats not reality.
