reality shock

After graduating a semester ago and starting my first full time professional career, I've come to realize that work sucks. I used to have so much free time during college (had only tuesday/thursday courses) and now that I'm done with school and working full time, I never seem to have time to do anything. It seems as though life has suddenly shifted to a boring repetitive cycle for me. I wake up in the morning, go to work, go to the gym after work, come home, shower, have dinner and then sleep. It's ironic how I had so much time to do things in the past but never had the money to do what I wanted to do and now that I do have money, I have no time. What should one do to alleviate this boring cycle?

Quitting your job is the obvious answer. Finding another one might be an idea, too. I just recently started my first post-college full time position, as well. I was in the same boat you are for the first couple months, until I could find an apartment closer to work. Now I live a 10-minute drive away :) I never was much of a social butterfly though, so it didn't bother me nearly as bad as it seems to bother you.

I'm liking work a hell of a lot more then school. Even though I work 9 - 6 I end up with more free time working then when at school. Plus the guys I work with still party pretty hard on the weekends so it's kinda like college - the studying + pay.

wow, only tuesday-thursday classes for 4 years, I would have hated that schedule. I also guess you weren't an engineering/science major. Then again I decided to go to grad school because I wasn't a big fan of the work cycle like I did at my summer internship..not that engineering grad school is less time consuming, just that the timing is different..

What was your major? It seems quite the opposite for me. I'm in my last year as biochem major. With all the 300-400 level chem classes, I am so busy that I get to work out only once a week when I'm a gym freak who works out everyday when I have time. I'd rather have a repetitive life with given free time whether it's half of the day or weekends. I just can't wait to get out of school and start working. Oh wait, I still got 4years of pharm school ahead of me. :(

I would have loved that schedule. I waste so much time on commuting, that by going to school only two days instead of 5 would have easily saved me entire day over the course of the week. Unfortunately the class schedule won't allow it since all major required courses are evenly spread over the week. That sucked. Luckily I'm on my last semester....

You should not make a career of something you do not like to do.

Work (for me anyways) should be a good time. I met a lot of good people and many great friends at the job. I'm not saying it's pure bliss all the time but overall I really enjoy it.

If you really don't like your job that much, you should quit, travel a bit, or just switch things up in general. It's only repetitive because YOU make it so.

Work only sucks when you dont like those around you. I worked construction, we dug basements, i used a shovel 85% of the time, i still loved it, they were great guys to work with.

WTF, M4H, new SN, or someone impersonating you

IMO, this seems like a pretty normal reaction to a first job after school. One thing to keep in mind is that the days of a 'job for life' are over - you'll probably have 8 jobs and 2 self-employment stints before you retire.
Just keep your ears open, an up to date resume on hand and roll with the wind. Just keep you commitments minimal until you find a good spot.

For me, as soon as the challenge/fun goes out of a new job, I move on - the last time was 4 years ago and the next will be in a year or two. What's the point of getting out of bed every morning if your not enjoying yourself?

you alleviate the boring cycle by spending your entire weekend preparing yourself, your clothes, your car, and your home so that you can live through another week of work. then you do it again the next weekend.

... oh, wait.

:D
