Realistically, would you socially survive & thrive without the internet?

I'm not saying as if the internet never existed - because obviously people did just fine before it was invented. Rather, what if the internet fell off the face of the earth? Assume you had no form of digital communications, and the only thing available was the old regional toll landlines for telephone communication. (Remember back in the day where you actually paid per minute even for 'local' calls? Of course you don't... you're not that old!)

How much more/less social would you be than you are now?

It would be somewhat awkward and very annoying for a while but we're human and we'll adapt to life without Internet again

Socially? Sure. Now professionally is a completely different matter. Not having VPN access through my internet connection would blow for off hours support.

I would not like it at all without internet. That's how I make my extra money and saving money.

Hotdeals from internet. ($ saving)

VNC to client computers via internet. ($ making)

Asking questions/advise on computer problems/tech issues ($ saving)

Watching tv shows/listen to music and no more cable/sat bills ($ saving)

Much higher interest rates earn from internet banks vs local banks ($ making)

Actually, it would probably do us a lot of good to have regularly scheduled "black outs" for a couple weeks at a time where the internet was killed and forced people to actually go outside and interact with other people.

I would be a total neurotic mess. It would make the world big again.

I suffer from paranoia, I need to see the news every 10 minutes or I lose it.

But Steam still works, right? RIGHT?

You would have to cope but I'm very used to just looking things up. Everything from weather and tv listings to which actors were in a certain movie or how a torque wrench works.

I'd probably be better off. I get lazy and sit on the computer now. If there was no internet I'd go do stuff at night.

If I didn't have my computer and internet, I'd just as soon go back to 19th century living. I enjoy my computer tremendously, but it's one of the few modern conveniences I like. I'd be almost as happy sitting next to my wood stove, and reading by candle light.

"Honey we're lost!"

"No we aren't I know exactly were we are!"

*pulls out Google Maps on the iPhone*

"DAMNIT!!!"

Yeah, same here.

I'd thrive, naturally athletic so I'd probably refocus all my efforts into some sport, like I did before I became so big into computers.

My job in IT would get a whole lot more interesting though.....

Nah, he'd be a mechanic keeping the presses going at a newspaper :^D

internet has sweet dick all to do with being social for me. it's all about wasting time when i'm bored or have nothing better to do. it's always been very seperate from "IRL" social life.

here's an example of an IRL converation on the telephone for the internet people:

"hey man, let's go golfing and drink some pints. we got 3, call <insert name>"
"sweet. see you there"

you can haz life outside of internet.

Do we still have TVs?

I guess I can do without it... I kinda miss going over to friends houses just to hang or them coming over like back in the day before the internet got big.
