I have an opteron 165 on the way and this will be my first time overclocking. I know each processor varies, but in general what kind of overclock should I expect to achieve with this processor?

I think most would agree you can get a gurantee of 2.4. 2.7 with aircooling is probably near the max end. Also depends on some other factors like, RAM, HSF, mobo, case cooling, and etc., So look for a range of 2.5-2.7? Maybe a tad more with watercooling?

What mobo do you have, one that supplies a high stable HTT i hope, otherwise your OC will be capped, and held back by the mobo.

I ordered an asus a8r mvp which seemed to clock high according to anandtech's review. Also does anyone know how high i'd be able to take it with the stock heatsink before I upgrade to a better cooler?

IDK if they ship the 165s with the heat pipe cooler or the standard A64 cooler, the heatpipe one is decent if you don't mind it being a little loud, the standard aluminium one isn't that great for OCing dualies...

I thought opterons got shipped with the heatpipe version but I am not sure. I figured I would give the stock cooler a try first to see how it is and then purchase a better one later if needed. -Rob

Wow you got the processor running at 1.7 with the stock heatsink. Thats pretty impressive. What kind of temps do you see with that setup? Also does the stock heatpipe cooler come with a thermal pad or should I order some arctic silver?

at first i stuck the hsf on with the thermal pad... then i found some as5 left over so i changed it.. but that thermal pad took a while to get off the cpu :/

the temps i'm seeing are REALLY low compared to what other ppl are seeing, even with their xp90s. mine idle's at 28C and full loads at ~42C
