Realistic date for walk in store and pick up Haswell (4770k) in Toronto, Can. Anyone?

Does anyone have a ballpark (or more approximate) idea when I will be able to walk into a computer shop here in Toronto and pick up a 4770k off the shelf?

I'm still sitting on an 17 920 @ 3.6 and I stream everything I play. I really would like to get an upgrade on this cpu, so I'm having a hard time sitting on my hands and waiting.

Thanks in advance.

Probably not before June, at best. Official launch date is beginning of June (June 2nd was mentioned specifically). May I ask why do you need to wait for 4770K? Why not pick up 3770K if you can find a good deal in Toronto? The difference between the two will not be significant(3-12% according to THG preview) unless 4770K can clock to 5+Ghz on air (which 3770K can't do regularly).

I've been eyeing the 3770k for a bit (also the 3930k, but it's still a bit $$). I kinda wanted to get a 4770k probably because of the shiny factor. Besides I was thinking if the 4770k is going to sell for what the 3770k sells for now... then why not just get the newest chip? Other than that, I don't really have any good reasons to not get the 3770k.

ok, so if it "releases" on Sunday, June 2nd.. I can probably expect it to be realistically in T.O stores by like the second week of July then.
Awesome.. how to hold off till then?

Find a good deal on 3770K, buy it, OC it and be happy :).

cpu is no problem
-the mb's might be limited waiting for the new chip sets
-still I'd wait for HSW at this point in time , but target jul-aug. and let some mb reviews take place.

-just to add
I got caught once with a crap mb with a nv chipset , so I'm very picky about mb's now days and wait for 2nd gens of mb [and pay a bit more] like the M5F after the first released mb's bugs show up.
-x58 had 920 C0 vs D0
-sb chipset\mb's had issues IMO right up to the z77 ,[including not fully pci-e 3.0 compatible for ib]

If you ever buy at launch, you would know there is massive price gouging. A 4770k setup would probably cost at least $100 to $150 more than 3770k system. All the mobo makers gouge like crazy at launch.

I thought the general consensus was that Haswell and C2 stepping motherboards would be widely available in Aug. The June launch date being quoted is for the Haswell and C1 stepping motherboards, which Intel has indicated will be in limited numbers due to the USB3.0 errata issue. I imagine that "limited numbers" means review samples. I don't get the impression that C1 stepping motherboards will be available to the average buyer.

One thing to be noted that all boards would be based on the new C2 stepping since the C1 stepping developed some USB 3.0 issues.

I waited for months for 3770K cus I thought it would be a sizeable upgrade over 2500k... Then there were the unconfirmed leaks of high temps and poor o/c, the anandtech preview showing 4% performance increase, etc etc.

When the reviews hit and confirmed everything I realized I shoulda bought a 2500K a year earlier. Honestly SB was the last processor to get excited about and probably will be that way for a long time given the current trends.

This I agree with. I guess it depends on how soon AVX2-enabled applications show up.

all of your opinions are really steering me towards getting a 3770k. Just looking for a deal now!

Haswell is literally 2 months away, I wouldn't buy into a platform that has no upgrade path when the alternative is waiting 2 months

I'd wait. If a 3770K will meet your needs after 4770K launches it will still be around (possibly cheaper), but if you pick up a 3770K and subsequently decide you'd prefer Haswell you'll take a loss on it.

Upgrading to either from i7 920 will not be earth shattering. I went from an i7 920 (3.7GHz) to a 3930K (4.2GHz), and ended up selling the 3930K again because it simply wasn't enough of an upgrade for the money.

...my $.02. :)

Awesome.. how to hold off till then?

Or you could contact a local store and have them order you one. Or NCIX or another E-tailer will likely have them available at launch.

When a good motherboard comes out for Haswell desktop (4770K) I'll be eying my local Micro Center for the next available chip. I'm on a nice i7 920 right now that can still do 4.2Ghz with HT on, but I'm currently chugging along @ 3.91Ghz :)

I'm waiting. oh and my regular desktop won't be upgraded for a loong time.. maybe second cycle for 14nm (toc)

When it comes down to it, 2 months isn't so long to wait. Even if its just to see what the 4770k does to the 3770k pricing. I wonder just how much difference going from an i7 902 @ 3.6ghz to a 4770k will be for mainly streaming stuff on twitch. (Sc2, FF14, etc). I just want the smoothest experience, and highest FPS (gtx 680 onboard).

You should go for an AMD FX 8-core 8320/8350 if you want to stream. At least according to some benchmark videos on YouTube, it's faster than a 3770K when streaming.

That is, if you don't mind the power consumption.

I have a i7 940 and my MB is dying slowly, some USB ports stopped working among other issues. I have a microcenter close to my house and they have the 3770K for $229, although price is not an issue I'm wandering if I should try to hold off for a few months or just get a 3770K rig...

And whats this about AMD releasing a 5ghz CPU, just a rumor?

I'm not upgrading from my 3570k until the price settles. No way I want to pay $100+ over MSRP for CPU+mobo. I'm more interested in Ivy-E anyway.
