I'm unimpressed with the frames games are getting @ 1600x 1200 full everything. Anyone have any reviews or people running 7800 Gts (Evga) @ 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768? I want to get a 7800GT but I'm un sure since I'm unimpressed with scores in the 1600 x1200 area.

Once you go up in resolution you can never go back :(

Its like being hooked on some exotic drug.

"im up to 1.9 megapixels every day maaaaaan"

2405 users are 2.3 megapixels, and the 3007 users... theyre hooked on the high grade stuff.

Lies, I can game at high reses on my main rig, but don't get pissy when I have to drop down to 800x600 to play on my laptop (which is crap, btw).

See! now 8x6 is crap :)

I used to happily game at 8x6... then 10x7... then 12x9... now im up to 16x12

This is the main reason I refuse to play games at a higher rest then 10x7...and I only bumped up to that because morrowinds menus were screwed up at 8x6. I can't afford to be buying high end video cards!

I'd like to hear from other readers out there about their opinion on higher resolution. It seems to me that higher resolution gaming, in some sense, is over hyped. Just about every game that I play scales the actual 3D environment to the resolution your playing. For example, the size of your player's character in 3rd person view is the same no matter what resolution you use, whether it be 800x600 or 1600x1200. The only differences are the size of the HUDs and Menus, as well as the jaggies and sometimes texture quality.

I'd like to see more games actually take advantage of the higher resolution and SHOW US MORE OF THE GAME GEOMETRY. If I play at double the horizonal resolution, I want to be able to see double the amount of game area on the map...

Sometimes I just think we need to take a step back and look at the larger picture (no pun intended). It irritates me when I have friends who play the same game as I do, with "crappy" 4 year old cards, yet get decent performance, just because they're gaming at 1024x768. Give us some more tangible results of High res gaming please, besides squinting to see the microscopic chat window!

You are talking about draw distance vs resolution.

Draw distance does need to improve in some games (im looking at you GRAND THEFT AUTO) but i dont see it as a huge problem in most titles.

Yeah. It, uh, renders the game at a higher resolution.

If you did that, everything on screen would be smaller. Actually, some older (2D) RTS titles did this (since they only had one size of art assets). You don't really want everything to be 1/4 the size when running at 1600x1200 versus 800x600 in most games.

The issue that reviewers have with doing benchmarks in lower resolutions is that most games do not stress the cards hard enough at those levels. That means that you end up presenting scores that are CPU limited instead of GPU limited.

That said, many, many people are using 17" and 19" LCD monitors. That means that 1280 x 1024 is the best they'll see. I have a 19" LCD monitor and I'm usually most interested in performance at that level with and without eye candy turned on.

I also think that more attention needs to be paid to lower resolutions when presenting reviews of low-end to mid-range solutions. You're not going to buy a 7300GS or 1300XT and try and game in 1600 x 1200. Even the 6600's and such are better reviewed at lower resolutions. That way I would see more benchmarks with different degrees of enhancements turned on.

Overhyped? Not at all. 1600x1200 is blurry mush compared to something like 1920x1440 and even the latter has visible aliasing unless at least 4xAA is used.

Just about every game that I play scales the actual 3D environment to the resolution your playing.
This is what is supposed to happen and this is a good thing.

If I play at double the horizonal resolution, I want to be able to see double the amount of game area on the map...
This is a terrible idea since it would totally break the game. This is not how 3D interpolation works.

Nonsense. The whole reason people choose larger 2D resolutions is so they can see more of their desktop, more of a text document, more of a webpage without scrolling, etc. The same should be applied to 3D applications as well. If i'm viewing at 1600x1200 I want to be able to go into third person and see more of my surrounding area without changing the viewing angle from 90 degrees (which would create a fish eye's view).

They see more with larger 3D resolutions as well, more of the renderer's internal state which essentially operates on an infinite resolution. The higher the resolution the more of the internal state you can see and the less artifacts from changing world co-ordinates to screen co-ordinates are observed.

The same should be applied to 3D applications as well. If i'm viewing at 1600x1200 I want to be able to go into third person and see more of my surrounding area without changing the viewing angle from 90 degrees
Do you not understand that this would totally break games? Somebody with a larger display will inherently tool someone with a smaller display in multiplayer because they can see people that can't see them.

The whole reason of putting games into 3D is to exactly avoid 2D scaling problems. That way you can increase image quality without affecting the core image.

If you don't think high resolutions provide visible IQ gains over low resolutions in 3D situations you need to go back and carefully look at them again.

So if we get powerful monitor with an equally powerful video card, running at ultra high resolutions should get us a 360 degree view of the game world? Nonsense.

And an even higher resolution screen would get you more than 360 degree vision?
